Bureau de Poste / at Tiny Grocer
Steak frites, moules frites and French onion soup out of a kitchen built inside a boutique grocery, in the converted Speedway post office that gave the restaurant its name.
Why go
Tiny Grocer's second store took over the closed post office at 4300 Speedway, and the extra room is what made a full restaurant possible rather than another deli counter.2 Steph Steele, who opened the original Tiny Grocer on South Congress in 2021, brought in Jo Chan to run it.1 The two kitchens draw on the same roughly 3,000 grocery items the store carries, which is why the wine you drink with the steak is a bottle you can walk out with.2
It trades under a different name now. The old site redirects, and the current page heads itself Tiny Grocer Café (Formerly Bureau de Poste)
. The format changed with it: counter service, no reservations, and one all-day menu with brunch every day from 9am to 2pm.3
Order this / avoid
- Order: steak frites, which is the dish Steele said she was most excited about before opening, or the moules frites.2
- Also on the current menu: beef tartare, croque madame, French onion soup and the burger royale.3
- Avoid: arriving expecting a reservation-led dinner. It is counter service, and the current menu runs all day rather than splitting into a separate 5pm dinner service the way it did at launch.3
What locals & experts say
- Austin Chronicle (Melanie Haupt, 3 October 2023), on who is cooking: "Bureau de Poste is helmed by Jo Chan, former Eberly brigadier, Jonathan Waxman acolyte, and Top Chef: Houston contestant."1
- CultureMap Austin (12 June 2023), on where the name comes from:
The name comes from the history of the building Tiny Grocer renovated at 4300 Speedway.
2 - No critic has reviewed the cooking. Both of the above are opening announcements, not a review.
Good to know
- Which door: 4300 Speedway, Suite 101, in Hyde Park. This is Tiny Grocer's second store. The South Congress original at 1718 S Congress is a different premises and has never housed this restaurant, despite what the saved list's district label says.1
- Timing: brunch daily 9am to 2pm; happy hour Monday to Friday 3pm to 6pm at US$3 tallboys, US$5 wine by the glass and half-price bottles.3
- Booking: none taken. Counter service.3
- Hygiene, and whose record it is: the guest restaurant holds no permit of its own.4
- Not this door: the South Congress Tiny Grocer is a separate premises and scored 94 in April 2024. That record is not transferable here.4
- Neighbors: First Light Books and Allday Pizza share the building.1
Verdict
could-visit — A French bistro built inside a boutique grocery in the converted Speedway post office, cooking steak frites, moules frites, French onion soup and a croque madame, with a deli and about 3,000 grocery items on the other side of the room. It opened in October 2023 under chef Jo Chan, a Top Chef: Houston alum out of Eberly, and now trades as Tiny Grocer Café. It runs counter service with no reservations, and brunch is daily. No Austin critic has reviewed the cooking, which is why this sits where it does rather than higher. The health permit belongs to the grocery: 72 in December 2025, above the 70 failing line but the lowest of its five readings.
