Cosmic Saltillo
Two house drinks came over from the Pickle Road original, the Cosmic Comet and the Liquid Sunshine, and there is an all-day taqueria in the yard.2
Why go
The bar carries the Cosmic Comet and the Liquid Sunshine over from Pickle Road. It pours the boozy coffees this group built its name on, over a rotating tap list.2 Nicolai McCrary reads the cocktails as light and refreshing, with a few frozens and some non-alcoholic builds over a full bar.1 Food comes from Cosmic Tacos in the yard, all day. Take a Cosmic Taco or a breakfast taco. Or build your own taco, torta or greens bowl. This is the second Cosmic site. It opened on 8 September 2023, in the former Historic Texaco Depot. Architect Clayton Korte converted it and left it looking overgrown on purpose.2
Order this / avoid
- Order a Cosmic Comet or a Liquid Sunshine, the two house drinks inherited from Pickle Road.2
- Or a boozy coffee, or whatever is on the rotating tap list.2
- Eat a Cosmic Taco or a breakfast taco at Cosmic Tacos in the yard.2
What locals & experts say
- Nicolai McCrary, The Infatuation Austin:
It's all set in a massive complex that feels like running around in a repurposed industrial warehouse, complete with an enormous dog-friendly patio, a rooftop deck with downtown views, an all-day taqueria, and a ton of plants to liven it all up.
The outlet gives it no number, because it scores only places where you can eat a full meal. It carries the site on its Austin bar hit list and its best patios guide.1
Good to know
- Open from breakfast until late, on the schedule CultureMap published when the site opened in September 2023. That is three years old and it is the only set anyone has published, so call ahead.2
- The building: the former Historic Texaco Depot, with a 30 foot tower leading to a lit rooftop deck. Two buildings on the property were renovated with reclaimed materials and kept their corrugated steel siding.2
- Hygiene, disclosed: Austin Public Health scored this kitchen 61 on 7 February 2025, filed as Cosmic Saltillo, 1300 E 4th St. Austin's scale starts at 100 and deducts for each violation, so higher is better, and the city's own report sets 70 as the line below which a re-inspection and a fee follow. The follow-up on 5 March 2025 scored 89. That is one sub-70 result inside the rolling 36-month window, and it sits above the 50 mark that triggers an immediate closure.3
- The other numbers are not findings: 81, 83 and 80 sit below the citywide median of about 90 and above the 70 failing threshold.3
- Not the Pickle Road site: Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden on Pickle Road is inspected as its own establishment under its own permit, and its scores, including a 100, belong to that address.3
Verdict
should-visit — Walk in, take the yard, and treat the taqueria as what it is: something to eat while you drink. Bring a dog and bring people, because the patio is enormous. If you want the coffee-first version of this group, the Pickle Road original is the older room.
