Dumpling World
The pan-fried thumb buns beat the xiao long bao here, and Melanie Haupt and Nicolai McCrary both say so.21 Hers are the pork, shrimp and chive:
the fatty pork and nutty shrimp popping with the grassy chive.1
Why go
This is the second door of a Sugar Land dumpling shop, open in the Triangle since April 2024.1 Dumplings come three ways, boiled, fried and steamed, and the differences are real: the soup dumplings have thin, delicate skin that still holds the broth, and the crab-filled ones are the pick, while the fried version trades some of that for a crisp base.2 The kitchen makes everything from scratch, which is why a full room means a slow one.2 Haupt on what the room is: Their workmanlike approach to dining may lack bells and whistles, but makes up for it in mostly excellent food that won't break the bank.

Order this / avoid
- Pan-fried thumb buns.
I cannot recommend the thumb buns highly enough; they are decidedly the GOAT of this menu.
Nicolai McCrary agrees and adds the mechanism: a soft wrapper, a golden crisp base, and just enough soup inside to keep them moist.12 - Soup dumplings for the table, classic or pan-fried, and take the crab version if it is on.2
- Boiled shrimp paste dumplings, which Haupt reads as a sturdier har gau:
the wheat-flour wrapper was a little thicker, resulting in a sturdier, heartier version with the same flavor profile.
1 - Boiled dumplings in spicy and sour broth as an entree if you are staying for a full meal.2
- Avoid the noodles. Haupt on the eggplant and minced pork:
I found it bland and greasy
. Her ruling on the whole section:I don't think you'd be missing much if you skipped this portion of the menu.
1 - Avoid the pan-fried chicken and corn potstickers,
bland and uninspiring
, and the steamed pork dumplings, whose filling she found coarse and inconsistently ground.1
What locals & experts say
- Nicolai McCrary rated it 8.1 for The Infatuation on 13 August 2024 and carries it in the outlet's Austin soup dumpling power rankings:
They're some of the best xiao long bao in Austin, particularly the ones filled with crab.
2 - Melanie Haupt reviewed it twice for the Austin Chronicle and came out on the thumb buns, with three named skips on the way. She is equally plain about the room, which is
minimalist, functional, and clean
, and about the welcome:The service is cordial, but not particularly warm or friendly.

Good to know
- There is no wine or beer, and no dessert. Tea or a canned soft drink is the choice; Haupt's fix for the pudding is to walk to Jeni's or Mandola's afterwards.1
- The Chinese burritos wrap shredded pork, potatoes or scrambled eggs in egg roll wrappers, and Haupt did not get to them.1
- The counter is Suite 203 in The Triangle.
- Hygiene: this kitchen failed an inspection in December 2025 and passed the re-inspection. Austin Public Health scored it 60 on 8 December 2025, filed as Dumpling World, 4616 Triangle Ave Ste 203. Austin's failing line is 70, and only 89 of the city's 20,964 published inspections fall below it. The required follow-up ran on 23 December 2025 and scored 83, and the three inspections before the failure scored 74 in June 2025, 86 in January 2025 and 83 in September 2024.3
- Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream shares the address, at Suite 200 on its own permit, scoring 95 in December 2025. Different business, different score.3
Verdict
should-visit — Go early or late, and put the whole order in at once. Nothing here is bookable, so the only decision you make before arriving is when.
