Mezcalería Tobalá
The bar pours mezcal straight and builds no cocktails. The list is the whole proposition.1
Why go
It is a small candle-lit room on the roof above Whisler's, and one of the first bars in Austin given over to mezcal alone.1 Nicolai McCrary of The Infatuation is direct about the house position. You come to sip. The bar builds nothing out of the spirit.1
Order this / avoid
- Order: mezcal, straight.1
- Avoid: turning up expecting cocktails, and turning up on a weeknight. It opens Friday and Saturday only.1
What locals & experts say
- The Infatuation Austin, Nicolai McCrary, July 2022, unrated:
Don't come here expecting cocktails
, and goshortly after they open if you want to avoid crowds
. The room is tiny, and the two-night week concentrates everybody into it.1
Good to know
- Timing: Friday and Saturday nights only, per the review. It is dated July 2022, so confirm before driving over.1
- Where: up the stairs at Whisler's, 1816 E 6th St.1
- I haven't found a producer, a palenquero or an agave species named anywhere, not even for the bar's namesake tobalá, so nothing published says how deep the list runs.
- Hygiene: this bar has no row of its own in Austin Public Health's register. Whisler's, the bar downstairs at 1816 E 6th St, scored 90 in February 2026 and 90, 91 and 97 before that. That is a different operation, and its score does not belong to this bar.2

- Note: "Mezcal mecca"
Verdict
should-visit — A tiny candle-lit room on the roof above Whisler's that pours mezcal and declines to make cocktails, which is the useful part: the list is the whole proposition. It opens Friday and Saturday only, so the trip has to be planned around it, and the review says go shortly after opening or stand on the stairs. No published source names a single bottle on that list, so how deep it runs is Jeff's word and not the record's.
