Phoebe's Diner
The classic American card carries three Texas turns: pimento cheese omelettes, deep fried french toast, and smoked brisket burritos.1
Why go
The Oltorf room is the original, and Nicolai McCrary is explicit about it: if you're seeking the original 1950s-style classic American diner experience, you'll want to head to the OG location on Oltorf
.1 He scores that room 7.7. Breakfast, brunch and lunch run daily, the weekday version of the room is quiet, and weekend noon is the full at-capacity diner with mimosas and sake-based cocktails on the tables.1
Order this / avoid
- Order: the pimento cheese omelette or the smoked brisket burrito. Those are the two places the kitchen stops being a generic diner.1
- Also: the pancakes, which The Infatuation calls some of the best in Austin.2
- Avoid: weekend noon, unless you want the packed room. Weekdays are the relaxed room.1
What locals & experts say
- The Infatuation Austin, Nicolai McCrary, 7 July 2023, 7.7: the menu
leans classic American
withsome distinctly Texas twists, including pimento cheese omelettes, deep fried french toast, and smoked brisket burritos.
He also files the brand in The Best Brunch Spots In Austin and The Best Pancakes In Austin.1 - The Infatuation Austin on the Brodie Lane room, unvisited: it is the brand's fourth location and runs
largely the same menu of breakfast and brunch items, including some of Austin's best pancakes.
McCrary states plainly that he has not eaten there, so that kitchen has no verdict on record.2
Good to know
- Booking: you cannot reserve. Put yourself on the online waitlist before you leave the house.1
- The Readers Poll placing is a public vote, not a verdict. Phoebe's is a finalist in the Austin Chronicle's 2026 Readers Poll brunch category, and nobody judged the food to put it there.4
- Four doors trade under this name. Austin Public Health inspects 408 W 11th Street downtown, 12001 Burnet Road north and 533 W Oltorf in South Austin, and The Infatuation reports a fourth room on Brodie Lane. The 7.7 above is the Oltorf original, so check which door you are heading for.3
- Hygiene: all three permitted doors are disclosed here. Downtown, 408 W 11th St, scored 92 on 3 March 2026 and has sat between 88 and 92 across six inspections. North, 12001 Burnet Rd, scored 90 on 20 February 2026. South, 533 W Oltorf, scored 88 on 2 August 2024 and has no reading since. Austin's scale runs to 100 with 70 as the failing line, so none of these is a finding.3
Verdict
could-visit — Nicolai McCrary rates the Oltorf original 7.7 for The Infatuation and tells you to go there if you want the 1950s diner rather than one of the newer rooms. The card leans classic American with three Texas turns on it: pimento cheese omelettes, deep fried french toast, smoked brisket burritos. The Infatuation also files the brand in its Best Pancakes In Austin list. You cannot book, so put yourself on the online waitlist before you drive over, and pick a weekday if you want the quiet version of the room. The register carries three permitted doors between 88 and 92, and the South Austin address has gone quiet since August 2024. Jeff's pin still does not say which one he meant.
