Sunflower Vietnamese Cuisine
Ngoc Dang opened Sunflower in the Hong Kong Supermarket center at Research and Ohlen in 1999 with a bánh xèo that few Austin kitchens made, and her daughter Anh Dang reopened it on West Parmer in August 2021 with much of the original cooking staff.423
Why go
Nicolai McCrary scores the new room 8.1 and calls it the go-to spot for central Vietnamese specialties like banh xeo and canh chua,
his favorite in town for both.1 The crepe is rice flour and turmeric, crisp, and it takes up half the plate; the other half is herbs, pickled vegetables and lettuce for rolling it by hand, with a fish-sauce dip that carries the heat.1 Mick Vann ate the original version in 2000 and found it fresh and first-rate,
at a time when very few Vietnamese menus in the city carried the dish at all.4 The mother ran the Research Boulevard room from 1999 to 2016, sold it, and the buyers closed it during the pandemic; Anh Dang and her husband Vinh Truong, both from Vietnam, brought the cooks and the trimmed menu to the center at McNeil and Parmer, and Truong told Community Impact the priority was food true to the first restaurant.23 Matthew Odam's line on why it matters: The thing that has long set Sunflower apart is the list of specialty items that represent traditional Vietnamese home-style dishes.

Order this / avoid
- Order: the bánh xèo with pork and shrimp, and roll it yourself. Poultry or calamari can stand in for the pork.1
- Canh chua, the tart catfish soup with pineapple and elephant-ear stalks that
become little crunchy sponges for all that broth.
Vann rated the shrimp version one of the better in Austin in 2000.14 - Nem nướng and chạo tôm, the barbecued minced pork balls and the shrimp paste on sugar cane, each on squares of pressed rice vermicelli with rice paper and a salad plate to bundle them in.4
- Avoid: stopping at pho. McCrary says the bowl is good and that ordering it means missing the canh chua.1
What locals & experts say
- Two chefs named the original room in 2011. Jam Sanichat of Thai Fresh went
to Sunflower for the satisfying barbecue pork balls wrap,
andSap
Apisaksiri of Madam Mam's toSunflower Vietnamese for Viet dishes.
That kitchen closed in 2016; its cooks came back with the daughter.63 - The Infatuation Austin, Nicolai McCrary, 18 December 2023, 8.1:
Despite the strip mall setting, the dining room at Sunflower never feels like it once housed a Radio Shack or a Blockbuster,
with plants and a wall of windows.1 - Matthew Odam, the Statesman, 8 May 2025, counts the original among the city's oldest and longest-running Vietnamese restaurants.2
- Anh Dang, to Community Impact in 2023:
Never in a million years did I think that all the old customers would come back and the neighborhood would be so warm and receiving of us.
3 - The old room's last notice was a pan. Mick Vann went back to Research Boulevard in 2013, after the owners had divorced and the husband had opened Le Soleil, and wrote that the food and the welcome had both gone. That room closed in 2016.5
Good to know
- Lunch has a wait most days; McCrary's advice is to bring something to do.1
- Where it is: 6001 West Parmer Lane, Suite 440, in the McNeil Crossing center with the H-E-B.32
- Prices, the last a critic printed, are the original room's from 2000: bánh xèo US$7.25, bún US$5.50, chạo tôm US$8.95. I have not read a current menu.4
- Hygiene: Austin Public Health scored the kitchen 89 and 85 across two inspections, the latest on 30 January 2026, facility 12394342, on a scale where 70 fails.8
Verdict
should-visit — Order the bánh xèo and the canh chua, the two central Vietnamese dishes Nicolai McCrary calls the best in town, and build the crepe into lettuce rolls at the table; add the nem nướng wrap the way Jam Sanichat ate it in the old room. Go for lunch and expect to wait.
