Jupiter
Wood-fired pizza and house ale under pressed tin, with church pews from St John's Presbyterian for seating. John Martin opened it in 1992, six years after he opened Triple Rock up the street.
Why go
Martin was already a name in California brewing when he built this one. He had started Triple Rock Brewery & Alehouse in 1986 and spent years working on brewing legislation, and Jupiter is what he did next.1 The two-story room was fitted out for gothic effect: pressed tin, antique church lighting, the salvaged pews, and a copper bar top that lets the tap handles catch the light in front of a wooden ice box.1
The patio is the part people plan around. Trumpet vines and string lights over fire pits and heaters, with live music up to six nights a week.1 The house calls itself a 30-year old Berkeley staple,
which is a fair description of what it does: students, families and large parties, all night, every night.3
Order this / avoid
- Order: a wood-fired pizza and whatever the bar staff put in front of you. The venue's own line is that open seats at the bar
draw beer lovers & learners alike to interact with our highly-trained bar staff.
1 - Avoid: walking a big group in cold. Reservations run two weeks out, same-day tables stop at the start of service, and twenty or more goes to the banquet side.3
Good to know
- Timing: 11:30am daily, lunch service to 4pm, kitchen to 10pm and 11pm on Friday and Saturday.3
- Getting there: Shattuck at Center, a block from Downtown Berkeley BART.
- Access: the venue asks for ADA needs on the reservation or by email.3
Verdict
could-visit — One fact on this page has two independent doors behind it: Triple Rock's own history names John Martin and 1986 exactly as Jupiter's does, so the lineage is not resting on a single site. Everything else is the house describing itself, down to the pizza, and I have nobody's tasting notes to set against it. What is still worth acting on is practical and hard to fake: the reservation rules, the group capacity and the covered patio. That is enough for this rung and not for the next.
