Viks Chaat

The lunch tray is the move: tandoori chicken with a smoky char, basmati, dal, raita and papadum, $15 on the MICHELIN listing. Amod Chopra's family has been frying chaat in West Berkeley since 1989.

Why go

Vinod and Indira Chopra started this to pull customers into their retail store. The room was 200 square feet, at the front of a distribution warehouse.3 They widened the dining area in 2004 and moved two blocks south in 2009. Their son Amod runs the kitchen now. He was born in Mumbai and grew up across India. Many of the dishes come out of those years and out of return trips, the family says.3

The scale is the surprise. The Chronicle counted more than 2,000 items going out on a busy day in its 2017 Top 100 entry, and they're all consistently good.2 The MICHELIN inspector found a bright orange and yellow building big enough to be a warehouse, which it is. Inside sits a counter-service kitchen and a market. The kitchen kneads its dough every morning and chops the produce the same day. Somebody folds every samosa by hand, all so that customers enjoy chaat the way it should be…fresh.3

Order this / avoid

  • Order: the daily lunch special. MICHELIN's line: For $15, you can get perfectly tender tandoori chicken with a mouthwatering smoky char, served alongside basmati rice, dal, raita and papadum.1 Add the bhature, fried and puffy, for the chole.1
  • Avoid: planning a late dinner around it. The kitchen closes early at dinner, so unless you're an early bird, go for lunch.1

What locals & experts say

  • MICHELIN Guide USA, read 28 August 2026: listed, no distinction printed. Its namesake chaat may be the star here, but lunch specials are a fantastic bargain.1
  • San Francisco Chronicle, Top 100 Restaurants 2017: the aromas of coriander, cumin and cardamom continue to seduce, and the daily tray was $11 that year.2

Good to know

  • Price: MICHELIN bands it at $, and the lunch tray was $15 when the page was read.
  • Booking: none. Order at the counter, collect from the stations around the room.2
  • Timing: lunch. It gets hectic at peak and the kitchen winds down early.
  • Getting there: Fourth Street at Channing, in West Berkeley.

Verdict

should-visit — Three independent records agree here, which is rare at this price: a live MICHELIN listing, a Chronicle Top 100 page from 2017, and the family's own history of the room. Each says something different, so none of them is carrying the others. What lifts it to this rung is that the guide and the Chronicle both describe the same mechanism, food built when it is ordered, and both put numbers on the scale of it. What keeps it off the top rung is that neither one is a review of the chaat. The Chronicle wrote a profile and MICHELIN wrote a listing.
