Pfeifer's German Bakery & Deli
Four counters in one Harker Heights unit: German bread, German pastry, a deli case of cold cuts and sausage, and a shelf of imported jars.1
Why go
The bakers work to what the house calls authentic recipes, and they fill the sweet case with cookies, pastries and tortes the same morning.1 The deli side carries German cold cuts, sausages and specialty cheeses, so lunch and the thing you take home come off the same counter.1 The grocery shelf is the part nobody else near Fort Cavazos has: mustards, candies and, in the bakery's own phrase, hard-to-find German products.
1 The house says people drive in from across Central Texas for it.1
Order this / avoid
- Order: bread first. German breads and rolls are the first thing the house lists about itself.1
- Order: sausage and cheese off the deli case to go with it.1
- Avoid: a Sunday or a Monday run. It is shut both days.1
Good to know
- Timing: Tuesday to Friday 8am to 4pm, Saturday 7am to 3pm. A bakery on those hours sells out of the good things early.1
- It is a suite, not a storefront. Unit 240 at 716 Indian Trail, and the phone on the page is worth using before a long drive.1
- They take special orders and catering through a form on the site.1
Verdict
could-visit — A German bakery with its own deli case and an import shelf is a genuinely useful thing to have within reach of Fort Cavazos, and the four counters mean one stop covers bread, sausage and the mustard to go on it. Nobody's account of the baking has been established, nor how long the family has been at it, so whether the rye is any good is an open question. Four opening days and a four o'clock close make it a morning errand.
