Cadenhead's Whisky Shop

One range on these shelves is single cask, cask strength, and sold in three shops on earth. This is one of the three.3

Why go

Wm Cadenhead is Scotch whisky's oldest independent bottler, and an independent bottler buys other people's casks and fills them on its own terms.2 Every range the company publishes is a Cadenhead's bottling, filled from casks it bought in. Those terms are written down: never chill filtered, never colored, a small number of casks per bottling, and no rushing or delaying a cask to suit a sales quarter.3 Chill filtration strips the fatty acids that cloud a whisky below room temperature, and it takes texture out with them, so refusing it is a decision you can taste in the mouthfeel. Time Out reported the same two refusals independently in 2014, described as nothing chill filtered, no caramel colouring.1

The firm started in 1842 as George Duncan's vintners at 47 Netherkirkgate in Aberdeen. William Cadenhead, a locally famous poet, worked for Duncan, bought the business after his death, married his widow, and put his own name over the door. His nephew Robert W Duthie built it on single malt Scotch and Demerara rum under the slogan By test the best, and was killed by a tramcar in 1932 on his way to see the bank manager. Ann Oliver ran the firm for the forty years after that, bought stock freely and kept no records, which is why the bank forced a sale, and in October 1972 Christie's auctioned the entire stock with no reserve on a single lot. Hedley Wright of J & A Mitchell bought the company shortly after, partly because he wanted the glass bottles.2 The company trading under the name today was incorporated on 22 December 1972, two months after that auction.7 J & A Mitchell also owns Springbank and Glengyle in Campbeltown, and it still owns this. There are three Cadenhead's shops in the world, in Campbeltown, Edinburgh and London, all company-owned.4

Order this / avoid

  • Order: something from the Authentic Collection. The company files that range under its own heading, Cadenhead's Shop Exclusives, and describes the bottles as exclusive to our Cadenhead's shops, single cask and cask strength, with the closed-distillery bottlings inside the same range. That range is the reason to walk into the Canongate shop instead of ordering online.3
  • Order: an Original Collection bottling when you want the distillery itself. These are casks chosen out of the Campbeltown warehouses for what they say about one distillery, at a price that starts around a third of what the older blended malts run.6
  • Order: a World Whiskies bottle for the experiment. Ireland, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and India, all of them single cask and cask strength, which is a fairer test of a young distillery than a diluted house bottling.3
  • Avoid: a Sunday. The shop runs Monday to Saturday, 10:30am to 5:30pm, and closes on the day the Royal Mile is busiest.4
  • Avoid: planning a warehouse tasting here. The warehouse, the tasting room and the blending lab are all in Campbeltown, and nothing the company publishes puts any of them on this street. Whether anyone will pour you a dram over the counter is a question the company answers nowhere, so walk in expecting to buy a bottle.

What locals & experts say

  • Time Out Edinburgh (2014) carries the only published judgment on the stock, and it is the masthead's own, unbylined: the shop is a magnet for whisky aficionados; some of the whiskies on sale here are nothing short of magnificent. Its standfirst called the shop Whisky shop with authenticity, pedigree and bottle. The line is eleven years old and it is the newest critical read that exists.1
  • Thijs Klaverstijn, Scotch Whisky magazine (2017), on how the company grows, which is the part that explains the shelf: In the past five years, for example, the company has grown exponentially, but is hardly selling as much as it can. Keeping in mind the boom-and-bust cycle of the whisky industry, Cadenhead's would rather go slowly than quickly. The same piece records that Hedley Wright, who had no heirs, arranged for Cadenhead's, Springbank and Glengyle to pass to a charitable trust, because the firm is Campbeltown's largest employer.2
  • The company's own rule, in its own words: Never chill filtered, never coloured … We believe in the sanctity of the whisky that comes out the cask. That is a claim about itself, and Time Out's independent report of the same two refusals is what makes it usable.3
  • No bylined critic has published a review of this shop. The masthead line above is the whole critical record on the whisky, and nobody has put their name to a visit.

Good to know

  • Hours: Monday to Saturday, 10:30am to 5:30pm, closed Sunday. Time Out published the same pattern in 2014, so it has held for over a decade.4
  • Festive hours: on 19 December 2025 the company rostered this shop by name for the festive period, 10:30am to 4:30pm on 24 December, shut from 25 December through 4 January, and normal hours back on Monday 5 January 2026. That notice is the freshest dated word anyone has published on this door.5
  • Price: the company's own web store ran GBP 35 to GBP 65 for blends and standard single malts on 4 August 2026, GBP 115 for a Lowland single grain, GBP 175 to GBP 185 for older blended malts, and GBP 1,000 for one Islay. Those are online prices out of Campbeltown, and the shop-exclusive bottles are not on that store at all.6
  • Hygiene: the shop holds no Food Hygiene Information Scheme record.8
  • Opening year: unknown. The company's own account puts the Edinburgh and London shops somewhere in the decades after the 1972 takeover, and Time Out was writing about this one as a fixture by 2014. The 1842 date belongs to the Aberdeen firm and has nothing to do with this address, whatever the listings sites say.2
  • Sites: three shops, all owned by the company. The shop on this page is 172 Canongate. Campbeltown at 30-32 Union Street is the one attached to the warehouse, and London is at 26 Chiltern Street. Everything else carrying the name abroad is a third-party importer.4
  • Getting there: the lower Canongate, a few minutes' walk down from the Tron and a couple of hundred meters up from the Scottish Parliament. The Black Grape is at 240 Canongate, further down the same street.
  • Booking: none. It is a shop, and it is small.

Verdict

should-visit — Everything on these shelves was filled by the company that owns the room, single cask and cask strength, and one range of it is sold in three shops on earth. That is a can't-get-it-elsewhere case made on the liquid rather than on the room, and it is why this clears could-visit. The comparison that settles the rung is the Edinburgh whisky bars already on this list. The Bow Bar and the Scotch Malt Whisky Society both sit at should-visit, and both bottle their own casks; the Society's Kaleidoscope pours liquid that exists nowhere else and the Athletic Arms took the national whisky-bar title in 2025. This shop matches the bottling argument and beats all of them on exclusivity, since the Authentic Collection cannot be bought from a website at all. What it cannot do is pour you a drink. There is no bar, no gantry to read and no dram to try before you commit, and the company answers nowhere whether anyone will open a bottle over the counter, so the transaction is a purchase and not an evening. Against The Good Spirits Co. in Glasgow, which ships as a Staple, this is plainly the stronger room: that one retails other people's bottles well and this one only sells what its own parent distilled and filled. It stops short of must-visit because a shop cannot be the night you build, the only published judgment on the stock is unbylined and eleven years old, and a bottle bought here can be drunk anywhere.

Order

  • Anything out of the Authentic Collection, single cask and cask strength, sold in three shops on earth and this is one of them
  • An Original Collection bottling, casks picked in Campbeltown to show one distillery undressed
  • A World Whiskies bottle if you want to taste what full cask strength does to an Indian or Australian malt
  • The 7 Stars blend, finished in Oloroso, which is the cheap way into the house style

At a glance

  • Booking: walk-in
  • Timing: closed sun, closes early
  • Best for: quick, solo
