Company Bakery
You have probably eaten this bread already, in somebody else's restaurant.3
Why go
The Skinny calls it one of Scotland's very best wholesale bakeries
and puts the position exactly: you'll find Company's bread and pastries throughout town, but head to their cafe in Musselburgh for the full experience.
1 Conde Nast Traveller's Edinburgh bakery roundup says the same thing from the trade side, that it supplies many of the city's top restaurants and cafes.2 The corroboration that matters is a critic naming it on someone else's table: Scots Ink's advice at Mara's Picklery is to start with the pickle plate, served with excellent bread from Company Bakery
.3 It is co-owned by Amy and Duncan Findlater, who also run the wine bar Smith & Gertrude.4
Good to know
- The counter is not in Edinburgh. The cafe is at Riverside Works on Station Road in Musselburgh, East Lothian - The Skinny gives the address as 6 Station Rd.15
- Price: nobody publishes one.
- Hygiene: Food Hygiene Information Scheme Pass at the Musselburgh cafe, inspected 17 September 2024, FHRSID 1785924, under East Lothian Council. The bakery's trailer holds its own Pass from 17 July 2025.5
- Searching the hygiene register: there is a second premises trading under this name in Edinburgh, at 36 West Telferton, registered as BASH'D Ltd and Awaiting Inspection as at 24 June 2026. It is not the cafe and it is not this entry's rating.6
- Getting there: Musselburgh is about fifteen minutes by train from Waverley, or a bus along the coast road.
Verdict
should-visit — One of Scotland's best wholesale bakeries by The Skinny's reckoning, and you have almost certainly eaten it already without being told - it is the bread under the pickle plate at Mara's Picklery, the toast under the venison mince at Stockbridge Eating House, a named supplier at The Black Grape. The catch is that the counter is in Musselburgh, not Edinburgh, and The Skinny is explicit that the cafe is where you get the full range rather than whatever your restaurant happened to order. Should-visit if you care about bread enough to get the train to Musselburgh; otherwise, now you know whose loaf it is.
