Nightcap
The door goes members-only at midnight and the room runs on to three.7
Why go
Sian Buchan, who runs Uno Mas around the corner, put the geography in a trade guide to her own city: Another couple of blocks down and within stone's throw of each other you have two late-night bars: Nightcap and Uno Mas, both open until 3am.
2 In 2025 the Edinburgh Bar Awards put Nightcap second in its Best Late Night Venue category, behind hers, on a night when Buchan herself took the programme's Legend Award.4
The drinking is downstairs, in a basement of concrete, tile and reclaimed wooden barrels with the lighting hidden. It belongs to Tiny Cup Collective, an Edinburgh group of four rooms that also holds The St Vincent, the retail arm Nip's next door at 3c, and Crybaby, which opened in Stockbridge in July 2025.3 Chris Grierson has been the sole director of the operating company since 2019.8
What the bar actually does with a glass is build Edinburgh into it, using the small Scottish producers most lists skip. Not Quite a Parthenon takes its name from the unfinished monument on Calton Hill and is built on Charmed Circle's Golden Promise strong water, with Cocchi Americano, birch, chocolate and mint. Lost in Leith runs Woven's whisky against barley and a Scottish soda syrup.1 Golden Promise is a Scottish malting barley, so the same grain arrives as a distilled spirit in the first drink and as an ingredient in the second, which is a deliberate line through a list and the clearest craft signal this room publishes.
Order this / avoid
- Order: Not Quite a Parthenon first and Lost in Leith after it, in that order, so the barley reaches you as a spirit before it reaches you as an ingredient.1
- Order: off the whisky side generally. The room leads on it in its own copy and publishes no bottle count, so ask what is open before you commit an evening to it.
- Avoid: turning up at half past midnight without membership. The door is members-only from midnight.7
- Avoid: cask ale. The branch record says in its own capitals that there is none.9
What locals & experts say
- Sian Buchan, CLASS (2023), writing a bartender's guide to Edinburgh and naming a room she does not own:
Nightcap on York Place is an intimate cocktail-led venue.
She discloses Uno Mas as hers in the same passage, which is what makes the naming worth something.2 - Gaby Soutar, The Scotsman (2024), short and specific on both the light and the list:
This downstairs bar, which is open from 5pm until 3am, has the right kind of lighting - ie. very dark and, thus, flattering,
andWe love the Edinburgh-themed drinks.
1 - Edinburgh Bar Awards 2025, Best Late Night Venue, Highly Commended, behind Uno Mas. The awards are voted on by the public and Edinburgh's bar community, and the organiser David Smillie describes a shortlist decided
With the trade having the final say
, so the placing carries a poll and a peer vote together and it is no critic's verdict.5 - Nowhere on the 2026 UK Top 50 Cocktail Bars. Three Edinburgh bars made that list, Panda & Sons at 9, Hey Palu at 17 and Nauticus at 27, with the American Bar at Gleneagles at 50 as the fifth Scottish placing. This room is in none of them.6
Good to know
- Hours: 5pm to 3am, corroborated by the venue, by Soutar and by Buchan. Which days it opens is published nowhere.7
- Membership: neither the cost nor the terms are obtainable, and the venue's own membership document has returned a 404 for months. Ask at the bar before eleven if a late plan matters.
- Booking: there is a booking control on the venue's own site. No policy is stated, and every description of the room calls it small, so walking in early is the safer plan.
- Price: nobody publishes one. The newest drink specs anybody has printed are from August 2024 and carry no prices, so ask what a round costs at the bar.
- The kitchen: the FSA registers these premises as
Feed / Nightcap
. FEED is the group's own kitchen brand, which ran across this bar and The St Vincent and was known for its buffalo wings. The trade report that establishes that writes about it in the past tense, so whether food is still served here is an open question.3 - Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme rates this premises Improvement Required, the failing rating in the Scottish scheme, from a City of Edinburgh inspection on 21 October 2025, with no re-inspection pending as at 4 August 2026. That is nine and a half months old, which makes it current evidence and not a stale record, and it belongs in the same breath as any recommendation.10
- The website will warn you. Its security certificate expired in February 2025 and the browser will say so before the page loads. The page itself still serves.
- Getting there: the York Place end of the New Town, at the top of Broughton Street. The Stand Comedy Club is next door at number 5 and the Playhouse is a few minutes east, so this is a plausible last stop after a show.
Verdict
could-visit — A 3am licence is a real thing in a city where most rooms stop at one, and the drinks list does something specific with it, building Edinburgh into the glass through small Scottish producers and running the same barley through two drinks as a spirit and then as an ingredient. Sian Buchan, who runs a bar two blocks away, names it in her own guide to the city, and that practitioner pick is the best evidence here. It does not clear could-visit, and the comparison that settles it is the Edinburgh cocktail bars already on this list. Three Edinburgh bars sit on the 2026 UK Top 50, Panda & Sons at 9, Hey Palu at 17 and Nauticus at 27, and all three ship above Nightcap; Panda & Sons was 2nd in the UK in 2025 and 34th in the world. Nightcap is on none of those lists and its one award is a highly-commended placing on a mixed public-and-trade vote, which is a popularity result with peer weight and not a critical verdict. The room also publishes almost nothing: no price, no opening days, no membership terms for a door that goes members-only at midnight, and a menu link dead for months. And a current failing hygiene rating is in force, nine and a half months old and inside the bound, which under ADR-0022 discloses rather than disqualifies but is a straightforward reason not to put this in a visitor's first three Edinburgh bars. It is a good late stop near The Stand, not a destination.
