The Kitchin
The Good Food Guide had begun to find the cooking
somewhat predictable (if not complacent)and reports that a recent lunch showeda renewed sense of energy and vitality.1
Why go
Tom and Michaela Kitchin have run this converted whisky warehouse in Leith's old docks since 2006, and the MICHELIN Guide carries it at one star in 2026 on both its Edinburgh and its City of Edinburgh rolls. The Good Food Guide's write-up is the most useful thing published about it, because it is not a rave: the guide says the flagship had begun to feel predictable, then describes a lunch that changed its mind, with head chef Lachlan Archibald running the culinary theatre
behind a glazed wall and Tom delivering regular cameos out front and at the pass.
Its inspector's highlights were a venison carpaccio on bone-broth jelly with pickled wild garlic bulbs, braised beef shin with Cafe de Paris butter and pommes Pont-Neuf, and a Hebridean lamb pithivier of slow-braised shoulder in pastry.1 Harden's annual diners' poll, separately, made this the most commented-on restaurant in Edinburgh this year, with fans calling it consistently a treat
and a minority calling it overpriced.
That is a reader vote, and it is worth reading as one.2
Order this / avoid
- Order: lunch. The Good Food Guide calls the set lunch generous and rates the kitchen on it, and it is 69 pounds for three courses against 130 at dinner.1
- Order: whatever the game season puts on. Harden's records the top tip as
The menu around game season is unbeatable.
2 - Avoid: dinner if price is the deciding factor. The three-course a la carte runs 130 pounds a head and the surprise tasting menu 165.2
What locals & experts say
- The Good Food Guide, on the classical French treatment with Scottish overtones, and on the lemon souffle
paired with local creme fraiche
that wasalmost criminal to deflate with a spoon.
Its reservation is printed alongside: the guide had beenbeginning to feel that it was becoming somewhat predictable (if not complacent).
1 - MICHELIN Guide (2026): one star, present on both the guide's Edinburgh directory roll and its City of Edinburgh county roll when they were read on 4 August 2026.6
- The Staff Canteen (2026) and the Scotsman (February 2026) both carry it on their full lists of the 2026 guide's starred restaurants.34
- City of Edinburgh Council rated the premises Pass under the Food Hygiene Information Scheme on 3 June 2026.5

Verdict
should-visit — Tom Kitchin's flagship has held a MICHELIN star into the 2026 guide and has been in the same converted whisky warehouse in Leith since 2006. The Good Food Guide's inspector is the reason to read further: the guide had begun to find the cooking predictable, close to complacent, and reports that a recent lunch showed real energy again, with Lachlan Archibald running the pass and Kitchin doing cameos out front. Harden's annual diners' poll made it the most commented-on restaurant in the city this year, and the same poll recorded a minority calling it overpriced at 130 pounds for three courses. Lunch at 69 pounds is where the value is, and it is the meal the guide rated.
