Cail Bruich
When Michelin gave Cail Bruich a star in January 2021 it was Glasgow's first in 18 years, and Lorna McNee had been running the kitchen for five months, straight off 13 years under Andrew Fairlie at Scotland's only two-star restaurant.
Why go
The Charalambous family opened Cail Bruich, Gaelic for "to eat well," on Great Western Road in 2008; the star arrived only after McNee, Great British Menu's 2019 Champion of Champions, took her first head chef job here in August 2020 (DRAM Scotland). The Fairlie training shows where Michelin says it does, in the saucing: classical emulsions and bisques built on Scottish produce. McNee now runs the operation as chef director and judges Great British Menu; David Scott took the head chef title in 2025, and the star held through the 2026 guide. AA gave it Best Restaurant in Scotland at the 2024 Hospitality Awards, on three Rosettes.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the seasonal tasting menu is the format; recent iterations ran brown crab in a Thai green curry dome, crapaudine beetroot with taramasalata and horseradish, hand-dived Orkney scallop with preserved tomato, blood orange and smoked eel, and a milk bread course with Creedy Carver duck (The Scotsman). Whatever the season, watch the sauces; that is where the two-star inheritance lands.
- Avoid: treating it as a drop-in dinner. Last seating is 8pm midweek, 8.30pm weekends, and the room closes for a summer break in mid-July.
What locals & experts say
- Michelin Guide UK (2026), One Star: "sauces are a particular highlight, be it a creamy truffle and brown butter emulsion or a rich bisque enhanced by XO and chilli," demonstrating the classical technique underneath the creativity. ref
- AA Hospitality Awards (2024): Best Restaurant in Scotland; the restaurant holds three AA Rosettes and a 2025 Notable Wine List award. ref
- The Scotsman (Rosalind Erskine): the winter tasting menu "lives up to its name," the name being Gaelic for "to eat well." ref
- DRAM Scotland (2021): "first Michelin star for Glasgow in 18 years," the city's first since Gordon Ramsay's Amaryllis era ended. ref

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
must-visit — The restaurant that ended Glasgow's 18-year Michelin drought in 2021 and has held the star through the 2026 guide, with AA's Best Restaurant in Scotland 2024 on top. The craft story holds up under the awards: Lorna McNee spent 13 years under Andrew Fairlie at Scotland's only two-star, and the classical sauce work Michelin singles out is the direct inheritance. This is the city's benchmark tasting menu; you plan the night around an 8pm last seating.
