Freddy & Hicks
They started in 2015 as a veggie and vegan street food stall at Platform and The Big Feed, and eleven years later the beef comes from Cranstons in Pollokshields while the meatless patty is still the family recipe.
Why go
The Kilmarnock Road room is new. Glasgow Live reported the move in April 2026, out of Langside Cafe in Battlefield and into the old Liquor Land unit, with Nithsdale Road before that (Glasgow Live). The kitchen calls itself a small, female-run restaurant cooking homemade comfort food, fresh to order
(venue), and the supply line backs that up: grass-fed Scottish beef from a named Southside butcher, patties formed in house. The logo on the window is Molly Hankinson's, a Glasgow School of Art graduate, drawn in 2020 as a scaled-up version of her piece Hands off my Burgers.
Order this / avoid
- Order: a smash beef burger for the Cranstons beef, or the vegan patty if you want the dish the business was actually built on. Loaded fries and mac and cheese fill the table out, and the kitchen makes the cakes and milkshakes in house.
- Avoid: Monday and Tuesday, when the door stays shut, and the delivery apps. Glasgow Live reports they take orders direct and do not run through Uber Eats, so the listings you find there are stale.
What locals & experts say
- Glasgow Live (Sean Murphy, April 2026): reported the Shawlands opening, and records that they began in London and Swansea before launching in Glasgow in 2015 as a veggie and vegan street food stall.1
- James vs Burger (April 2018), on their Platform street-food era:
Hold The Cheese on This Excellent Vegan Burger.
A named burger blog, and the only critical headline on record.3 - No award: they are not among the nine Scottish winners at the British Burger Awards 2025, which were Burger Island, Saints Sizzle, Burgur Grill, Three Brothers, NOLA Soul, Smokey Trotters Kitchen, Bucks Bar, Burgers and Beers Grillhouse and Shakedown.4
- Food hygiene: an FSA record exists for this address but the rating could not be retrieved, so none is reported here.
Good to know
- Timing: Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday 5pm to 9pm; Friday and Saturday 3pm to 9pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
- Booking: five tables inside and the team asks for advance booking, so treat sit-in as bookable and takeaway as walk-up.
- Drink: BYOB. Bring the beer.
Verdict
could-visit — A burger shop that started as a vegan street-food stall in 2015 and now buys grass-fed Scottish beef from Cranstons in Pollokshields, which is an unusual direction to travel and it shows in a menu where the meatless patties are the house recipe rather than the afterthought. The Kilmarnock Road room opened in April 2026 with five tables and a BYOB policy. No award, no review of this site yet, and no published prices, so it sits at competent-and-interesting. Worth it if you are in Shawlands and want a burger where the vegan option is the one with history behind it.
