Istanbul Turkish Kebab House
The kebab comes to you unassembled, meat and bread handed over separately, so the bread never steams itself soft in the wrap and you dress it yourself before the char is gone (Shawarma Police).
Why go
A counter at 7 Paisley Road West in Kinning Park that the city's dedicated kebab reviewer calls The OG
and the legendary Kinning Park establishment,
and includes among the ten best kebab places in Glasgow (Shawarma Police). The meat goes over charcoal rather than sitting under a lamp, and one order buys four of them: lamb kofta, lamb doner, lamb shish and chicken shish in a single mixed kebab, GBP 4.50 when it was scored. The kitchen also runs Turkish items past the doner canon, lahmacun and sarbenies among them, which is unusual on a Glasgow kebab counter.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the mixed kebab. It is the dish that took 9 out of 10, and taking all four meats in one go is the fastest way to work out which one the grill treats best3.
- Avoid: counting on eating it there. The absence of seating is the only reason the score was not a 10, in the words of the reviewer who gave it.
What locals & experts say
- Shawarma Police, willmill82 (21 February 2023): on returning to the city,
if I were absent from Glasgow for a prolonged period, this would almost certainly be my first visit to anywhere in the city.
Note that the list it sits in carries the author's own caveat, these are not in any particular order.
2 - Shawarma Police, willmill82 (18 June 2017), the scored review: 9 out of 10, with the meat charcoal-grilled and
cooked with careful attention,
and the note thatThey also do a range of Turkish non-kebab foods, like Sarbenies and Lahmacuns.
3 - GlasgowWorld (2023), introducing the reviewer:
Hailing from London, our kebab constable moved to the city in the early noughties - and has faithfully watched his beat evolve.
Read via search capture, since the outlet blocks direct fetch.4 - A lead, not a citation: Ron Mackenna reviewed this takeaway for The Herald. The page could not be fetched from here on 2026-07-29, so nothing from it is used.5
- Food hygiene, checked: Pass, though the inspection dates to 27 January 2021.6
- Local rec: Jeff's note, crediting the shwarma police. The reviewer and the enthusiasm are both real, and the ranking he compressed it from is unranked.
Good to know
- Where it actually is: 7 Paisley Road West, G51 1LF, a few minutes from Shields Road and Kinning Park subway stations.
- Timing: no venue channel publishes hours. Treat the open-late flag as an assumption and check before a late run.
- Booking: walk-in, takeaway. Assume you are eating it somewhere else.
- Prices: GBP 4.50 for the mixed kebab as reviewed in 2017, with a large for GBP 1 more. Expect movement.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Best Turkish kebab in Glasgow according to shwarma police"
Verdict
could-visit — The one reviewer who systematically covers Glasgow kebabs scored this 9 out of 10 and called it 'The OG', and in 2023 wrote that returning to the city he would come here first. The build is the reason: charcoal-grilled lamb kofta, doner and shish handed over self-assembly with the bread separate, which keeps the bread dry and lets you dress it yourself, at GBP 4.50 when reviewed. It stays at could-visit because there is nowhere to sit, the scored review is nine years old, and no critic in wider circulation has been read on it.
