The Belle

Four independent sources over eleven years all recommend this pub, and not one of them names a beer.

Why go

It is a small tenement room with a coal fire, stags' heads on stone walls, mismatched retro furniture and a chess set on the window bench, and it traded as a spit-and-sawdust bar called The Western before it became this (Time Out). Two working Glasgow operators send people here. Julie Lin of Ga Ga calls it "beautifully done inside", and Lily Brown, who runs Crabshakk Botanics, calls it "everything you need in a pub" (The Glasgow Wrap). Time Out gave it four stars in 2014 for a draft list that was unusual in Glasgow then, Anchor Steam and Brooklyn Lager alongside Krusovice and Sagres, with a malt of the month behind the bar. Whether that list still looks like that is the open question on this entry, because nobody has written about the taps since, beyond Liam Smillie reporting "some pretty good stuff on tap" in April 2025 (GlasgowWorld). Dogs are welcome and there are usually several.

Order this / avoid

• Order: whatever American or continental beer is on, and ask what the malt of the month is, because that was the standing deal at the spirits end. Take the window bench and the house chess set if it is free.
• Avoid: asking for Tennent's, which Smillie went looking for and did not find, and bringing a crowd into a room Time Out measured as "living-room sized confines."

Good to know

• Where: 617 Great Western Road, a few minutes from Kelvinbridge subway.
• Timing: open from midday to midnight, per The Skinny's listing. Check the pin, since the pub publishes nothing itself.
• Booking: walk in. There is nothing to book and not much room to hold.
• Outside: street tables at the front, which take afternoon shade, and a small yard at the back.
• Dogs: welcome, and there are usually several.
• Food: light lunches, wraps and bar snacks. What exactly is on now is unresolved across sources, so plan to drink rather than eat.
• Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme records a Pass, rating date 16 November 2022. Pass is the clean result in the Scottish scheme. ref

could-visit — Go if you are on that stretch of Great Western Road, and you will be glad you did. Everyone who writes about The Belle likes it, and they all like the same thing: a coal fire, a room the size of a living room, dogs under the tables, and strangers who talk to you. Julie Lin of Ga Ga calls it 'beautifully done inside and really, really nice'; Lily Brown of Crabshakk Botanics says it is 'cosy, familiar, everything you need in a pub with some bouji snacks'; Time Out gave it four stars for being 'one of the West End's cosiest wee pubs'; and GlasgowWorld's Liam Smillie walked out in April 2025 saying he could not recommend it enough. Here is what holds it at this rung. In twelve years of coverage, nobody has named a beer, a whisky or a dish. The one report on what is actually poured is Time Out's from 2014, and it was a good list then, Anchor Steam and Brooklyn on draft when Glasgow had almost none, with a malt of the month behind the bar. Whether any of that still runs is unestablished. Food and drink come before atmosphere, so an affectionate room with an unread cellar sits at could-visit until someone reads the taps. Move it the day a current list turns up.
