Joe's KC BBQ
Jeff and Joy Stehney won the American Royal Open in 1993 with a competition team called Slaughterhouse Five, then put a barbecue counter inside a working gas station at 47th and Mission three years later. The sandwich that came out of it loads brisket, provolone, onion rings and sauce onto one roll.23
Why go
Stehney went to his first barbecue contest in 1990 on a friend's invitation and came back changed. The smoke. The smell of it. The camaraderie. The competition. The passion. And, of course, the food. I was hooked,
he says on the venue's own history page.2 He and Joy bought a smoker, built the team, and spent the next six years winning American Royal and Jack Daniel's titles before opening the gas station room in 1996.2 It opened as Oklahoma Joe's, with Joe Don Davidson of the Oklahoma Joe's Smoker Co. as a partner, and took the Kansas City name in 2014.4
Order this / avoid
- Order: the Z-Man. Ryan Bernsten brings out-of-towners here for it and watches their eyes light up on the first bite.3
- Order: burnt ends and ribs, and pull both sauces. Bernsten rates the thick classic and the spicy one against
expertly seasoned ribs and smoky burnt ends,
and says the friesmay also be the best in town.
3 - Avoid: Sunday. The gas station is closed, and so are Leawood and Olathe.1
What locals & experts say
- Ryan Bernsten, The Infatuation (18 September 2025), ranking it first of fourteen:
Joe's is the gold standard of local BBQ.
3 - Bernsten on the queue:
There's always going to be a wait at this functioning gas station/restaurant, so get in line, make some friends, and enjoy the convenience store-meets-busy-dining room vibes.

- Which room: three Joe's trade in the metro and this entry is the original at 3002 W 47th Ave, on the Kansas side. Joe's Next Door is a separate room across the street.1
Verdict
must-visit — The evidence runs two ways and both are strong. Jeff and Joy Stehney took the American Royal Open in 1993 and were cooking competition briskets for six years before they sold anybody lunch, which is the pedigree the counter is built on. Ryan Bernsten put the room first of fourteen in September 2025 and called it the gold standard, and that is a current, bylined, ranked judgment made last September. Against that, the awards on file belong to the competition team and not to the restaurant, and the Bourdain line reaches the entry through a piece Joe's own marketing director helped write. The rung holds on the cooking and the ranking, and the entry does not lean on the rest.
