Dishoom (King's Cross)
The dining room is a Victorian railway transit shed, a godown that moved goods between Britain and Bombay for a century, converted in 2014 into what was then the largest Dishoom at around 9,000 square feet.
Why go
Shamil and Kavi Thakrar built the group around the Irani cafés of post-war Bombay, rooms Shamil describes as "important for being truly shared spaces, where people of any culture, class or religion could share tables, rub shoulders and break bread together." King's Cross runs that idea over three floors with a mezzanine above the open kitchen and the Permit Room bar in the basement, and it tells the story of Indian independence through the artwork. Breakfast is the sleeper meal: the bacon naan roll and the Parsi omelette start at 8am on weekdays. The house black daal goes overnight before it reaches the table, and Harden's diners call it "legendary." Since 2015 the group has donated a meal for every meal served, reaching 25 million by 2025 through Akshaya Patra and Magic Breakfast.
Order this / avoid
- Order: bacon naan roll with a chai in the morning, black daal and a nalli nihari biryani later, gunpowder potatoes alongside.3
- Avoid: the 8pm walk-in as a couple. Book before 6pm for any group size, or come with six people, or eat breakfast instead.

where dinersnearly always have to queue for a table, often for at least an hour.
Food 4, ambience 5, around £58 a head.2 - The Good Food Guide: the branch is
Rekindling the spirit of old Bombay's Irani cafés,
at about 300 covers.3

Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: Very popular modern Indian chain.
Verdict
could-visit — A well-run staple, and not a destination. Jeff ruled on the Glasgow room first (2026-07-30: 'fine as staple; it was novel in glasgow in 2024, but its mid-2026') and the same reasoning governs this one: Dishoom is a multi-site group rolling out a format, which under the operator-motive rule carries the burden of proof on culinary edge and value rather than inheriting a rung from its reputation. The room is handsome, the bacon naan is genuinely good and the queue is real, but a Bombay-cafe pastiche at scale is not what the exemplar test sends people to. Jeff (2026-07-30, on seeing it ranked as a destination): "Dishoom (King's Cross) is not a destination level." London has a deep Indian field, so peer-field depth makes this a harder claim here, not an easier one.
