Mēs Pies & Wine
The shortcrust is rolled out by hand along a steel counter every morning, and in 2024 the ox cheek pie that came off it won its class at the British Pie Awards.
Why go
Fernando and Martin met working at The Cow in Notting Hill and opened this Harrow Road shop at the end of 2022. Their own site calls them "two 'foreign' chefs" running "the only pie and mash shop in London to scoop a prestigious British Pie Award." The winning pie was ox cheek and shin of beef with root vegetables, slow cooked in red wine, and it took the best beef and vegetable class in 2024. Pies run 8 to 9.50 pounds. The wine list is natural and turns over constantly, with Austrian skin contact and Hungarian Cabernet Franc among what The Nudge found open.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the ox cheek and root vegetable, then a glass of whatever skin contact is open. The rabbit with celeriac and red peppers and the creamy mushroom and thyme both took class wins in the shop's 2026 run.
- Avoid: planning a Sunday or Monday visit. Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 8pm, is the whole week.
What locals & experts say
- British Pie Awards 2024, best beef and vegetable pie class: Time Out reported the win,
Serving up handmade pies and natural wines, Mēs is widely renowned for its delicious dishes. You can even buy the shop's pies in Selfridges.
1 - The Nudge (London):
a little neighbourhood spot specialising in traditionally hand-crafted pies
witha long steel counter; the construction site where shortcrust pastry is skilfully rolled out by hand each day.
2 - British Pie Awards 2026: the shop says it took 11 awards,
3 Gold, 5 Silver and 3 Bronze,
with class wins for the rabbit and the creamy mushroom and thyme. That count comes from the shop, not from an independent record.3
Good to know
- Timing: Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 8pm. Closed Sunday and Monday.
- Booking: walk-in. It is a counter with a few seats, not a dining room.
- Buying instead of going: the pies are stocked at Selfridges, per Time Out, and the shop ships with free delivery over 50 pounds.
- Hygiene: FSA rating 5, Brent, inspected 15 May 2025.
- Getting there: 996 Harrow Road NW10 5NT, a few minutes from Kensal Green station, which is a long way from central London.
Craft signals (wine: a changing natural list behind a fixed pie counter)
Two axes moving at different speeds. The wine is the part that turns: what is open by the glass comes off a changing natural list rather than a printed card, which is why the entry points at whatever is open rather than naming a bottle. The pies are deliberately the opposite, a short handmade range good enough to take a British Pie Awards result in 2024 and to sell through Selfridges, and there is no reason for that to rotate. Seasonal is the honest label for the pair.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "British pie award winner 2024." REAL. Confirmed: the beef and vegetable class, for the ox cheek and shin pie.
Verdict
should-visit — Two chefs who met on the pass at The Cow opened a pie shop on Harrow Road at the end of 2022 and won a class at the British Pie Awards in 2024 with ox cheek and shin of beef slow cooked in red wine. The pastry is shortcrust rolled by hand at the counter every day, the pies run 8 to 9.50 pounds, and the wine list is natural and changes constantly, which is not what pie and mash usually means in London. It is five days a week, noon to 8pm, and it is a long way west. Worth the trip if pastry is your thing, and the pies also turn up in Selfridges.
