Micky's Chippy
Jake Missing's description of the chips is the whole case for this place:
some fat, some crispy, some soggy, all perfect(The Infatuation, January 2025).
Why go
It is a fry-to-order chip shop on a side street off Kingsland Road, a few minutes from Dalston Kingsland station, and it holds an FSA rating of 5 from an inspection in May 2024. The Infatuation scored it 7.8 in January 2025 and found the haddock gloriously crisp fried.
Regulars order the battered sausage. The half fish and chips is the value order, which matters more here than any signature, because the point of a shop like this is that a full portion is more fish than most people want. The curry sauce has been the thing people mention since at least 2011, when a local reviewer wrote your gonna want to try that curry sauce
(London on the Inside).
Order this / avoid
- Order: Jeff's order is a chip butty with curry sauce, which is his call rather than a listed menu item. If you want the sourced version, take the half fish and chips with mushy peas and curry sauce.
- Avoid: making a special trip without checking it is open. No reliable source publishes the hours.
What locals & experts say
- Jake Missing, The Infatuation (23 January 2025, scored 7.8): the chips are
some fat, some crispy, some soggy, all perfect,
and the haddock isgloriously crisp fried.
1 - London on the Inside (1 February 2011):
A huge chunky, battered cod and portion of chips, fresh out of the fryer,
and on the sauce, your gonna want to try that curry sauce.
Fifteen years old, so read it as reputation rather than as a current review.2 - Local rec: on Jeff's list with his own order attached, below.
Good to know
- Timing: no opening hours are published in any reliable source. Call ahead or take your chances.
- Booking: none. It is a takeaway counter, registered with the FSA as a takeaway and sandwich shop.
- Price: current prices are not published. The only sourced figure is from 2011 and is not worth quoting at you.
- Finding it: the postcode is N16 and older write-ups call the area Stoke Newington, while newer ones call it Dalston. It is the same shop, on Pellerin Road.
- Dietary: no allergen, gluten-free or vegan statement is published.
- Hygiene: FSA rating 5, Very Good, Hackney, inspected 9 May 20243.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Order: "Chip butty with curry sauce" REAL. Not listed on any menu that could be checked, so ask for it.
Verdict
could-visit — Go if you are near it. A proper Hackney chip shop with an FSA 5 from May 2024 and a 7.8 from The Infatuation in January 2025, doing haddock and cod fried to order with mushy peas and curry sauce. The best line written about it is that the chips come 'some fat, some crispy, some soggy, all perfect', which is what a good fryer actually produces and what a chain never will. There is no award, no chef on record, and nothing here you could not find at two or three other London chippies, so it stays a neighborhood call rather than a trip.
