Peckham Cellars
Ben McVeigh was head sommelier at 28-50 Fetter Lane before he opened this with two friends, and the 150-odd bottles on the shelves are the same list whether you drink them here or carry one home.
Why go
Helen Hall came from Rovi and Luke West-Whylie from Marcella and Jones Family Kitchen, and between the three of them the room does one thing properly: buy well from small growers and get out of the way (London On The Inside). Ruth Spivey, writing the venue up for Star Wine List, puts the buying focus on "artisanal bottles from France and Spain, with lesser known regions rubbing shoulders with the classics," alongside a year-round programme of wine dinners and tastings (Star Wine List). The list turns over constantly, which is the craft signal for a wine room, and the kitchen keeps its plates short so they stay out of the wine's way. A Michelin Bib Gourmand arrived in the 2021 guide, two years after opening.
Order this / avoid
- Order: ask what is open that never reached the list. London On The Inside got a Catalan organic red that way. Then burrata with pickled pears and walnuts, purple sprouting broccoli with whipped gorgonzola and breadcrumbs, and whatever the board is short-buying that week.
- Avoid: Mondays, when it is closed, and treating it as a restaurant. The wine is the point and the kitchen knows it.
What locals & experts say
- Ruth Spivey, Star Wine List (2023): "An eclectic and expansive selection of sustainable and organic wines adorn the shelves to be taken away or drunk in alongside snacks and small plates." ref
- London On The Inside (December 2021), on the kitchen's method: the menu "changes seasonally but always sticks to that simple style of cookery that lets the produce shine and is all about flavour rather than unnecessary bells and whistles." ref
- Harden's diners' survey, including a reporter arguing against their own bias: "I've never had a bad meal here: in principle I'm not a fan of small plates but here it all works." Elsewhere the survey calls it "this exceptional local wine room, one of the prime movers and shakers in the Peckham foodie scene." ref
- Michelin Bib Gourmand, 2021 guide, named by all three sources above. Whether it is still held could not be checked from the guide itself.
Good to know
- Where: 125 Queens Road SE15 2ND, with floor-to-ceiling windows and an outside terrace.
- Timing: closed Monday. The venue's own site refuses both of this project's fetchers with a 403, so precise current hours are not recorded here rather than guessed.
- Sites: a Camberwell sibling exists. The food-hygiene register holds Peckham cellars limited as a separate retail premises at 75 Camberwell Church Street SE5 8TU, and Harden's records a spin-off called Little Cellars announced for 2023. This row is Queens Road only, and ratings do not cross between them.
- The shop: the wine you drink in is the wine you can buy off the shelf, which makes the markup legible.
- Hygiene: FSA rating 4, inspected 18 November 2025. Components are hygiene 5, structure 10, confidence in management 5, so the weak mark is the building rather than food practice. ref
Jeff's take (his words)
Nothing. His saved-places export carries an empty Note for this row, checked against london/data/_src-part3.csv. The master CSV's "Neighbourhood wine bar with a Bib Gourmand" line came from an enrichment pass. It was checked rather than repeated, and it holds: three independent sources name the award and the 2021 guide it came from.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
should-visit — Worth going south for if you drink seriously. Ben McVeigh was head sommelier at 28-50 Fetter Lane before he helped open this, and the list shows it: over 150 bottles weighted to small growers in France and Spain, turned over constantly, and the same list sits on the shop shelves so you can carry a bottle home at retail. Ruth Spivey, writing for Star Wine List, describes a selection built on artisanal bottles with lesser known regions rubbing shoulders with the classics. The kitchen is deliberately short and plain, which is the correct decision next to a list like that, and Harden's reporters keep saying the food punches above what a wine bar owes you. It earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand within two years of opening in late 2019. It sits below the top rung because the cooking is support rather than the reason, and because the current chef is not even established in print.
