Pockets
The last thing that goes into the pita is a slice of potato that has been battered and deep fried, and that is the detail people remember about a sandwich with one recipe and no competition on the menu (The Nudge).
Why go
The bread is made in the building. That is the thing that changed when Pockets stopped being a weekend stall in Netil Market and took a railway arch on Mentmore Terrace in December 2023: the arch was big enough for a bakery, so the stone-baked pita is now made where it is filled (Hot Dinners, The Nudge).
What goes inside is one recipe and it has not changed. Jake Missing spent most of a review on the assembly rather than the ingredients, because the assembly is the technique: falafel, cabbage, hummus, zhug, amba, tahini, and then the same again, and again, so that nothing is rationed to one lucky mouthful. That review scored 9.3, and it was written about the stall, which closed in July 2023 (The Infatuation).
It is nine pounds, it is takeaway only, and there is nothing else on the menu. The Good Food Guide lists it as a Local Gem at this postcode.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the falafel pocket. There is no second option. Take the pickled chilli, which Missing marked as essential, and eat it standing up before the bread loses its steam.
- Avoid: the peak of lunch. The queue forms the moment the hatch opens and Talisa Dean's advice is the right advice, which is to go early. Do not look for a seat.
What locals & experts say
- Talisa Dean, The Nudge, July 2026, on what the move bought them: "The arch has given Pockets enough space to build an in-house bakery to make their signature stone-baked, fluffy, cloud-like pitas, and a takeaway hatch to sling them from." Her warning: "this is one of those hype-magnet dishes whose success has built a fanatical fanbase, and a long line of queues that form the moment they open." ref
- Jake Missing, The Infatuation, scored 9.3, writing about the Netil Market stall in 2021: "They get that a pitta needs to be metronomically layered in the most mesmerising fashion. And they get that one item, done perfectly, is all you need in this brilliant genre of eating." He also put it at "amongst the best £7 you can spend in London". That page now carries a permanently-closed banner, because it is about the stall and not about this shop. ref
- The Good Food Guide, Local Gem: "Famous for its pop-up pitch on Netil Market, Pockets has moved round the corner to a permanent new home on Mentmore Terrace." Unbylined guide copy at 367 Mentmore Terrace, so it is a listing rather than a personal verdict. ref
- No chef vote. All 622 lines of the London industry-vote file were searched on 1 August 2026 and no working cook or operator in the corpus has named it.
Good to know
- Where: 367 Mentmore Terrace E8 3RT, in the arches by London Fields station, among e5 Bakehouse, Koya Arch and the rest of the terrace.
- Sites: one. The Netil Market stall that made the name closed in July 2023 and nothing written about it describes this address.
- Format: takeaway only, no bookings, one item. £9 as of July 2026.
- Timing: go early. The queue starts at opening.
- Website: none. The operator publishes on Instagram at @pockets_uk and nowhere else, so
website:is left blank, and current hours could not be established from any source. - Diet: plant-based, per Hot Dinners and per the published build. Nothing narrower is claimed, since the venue's own dietary statement was not read.
- Hygiene: FSA rating 4, inspected 12 March 2025. A pass, and the lowest rating among the twelve venues curated in this batch, recorded with its date. ref
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: none. His saved-places export carries an empty note for the row "pockets", so nothing is attributed to him. The master CSV line calling them falafel pitta specialists under a London Fields arch is curation's wording, and it is accurate.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
should-visit — One thing, done to death in the right way, for nine pounds. Itamar Grinberg started this as a weekend stall in Netil Market during lockdown with a single item on the menu, and Jake Missing scored that stall 9.3 for The Infatuation and spent most of the review describing the layering: falafel, cabbage, hummus, zhug, amba, tahini, then again, then again, so no bite gets a filling the one before missed. The stall shut in July 2023 and the shop opened at 367 Mentmore Terrace that December with the thing that makes this a craft argument rather than a queue: an in-house bakery in the arch, stone-baking the pita they steam and fill. Talisa Dean confirmed the setup and the £9 in July 2026, and The Good Food Guide lists it as a Local Gem at the right postcode. It is takeaway only, there is one item, and the line starts when the hatch opens. It holds at worth-the-detour rather than higher because nobody has assessed the shop against the stall it replaced, no chef in our vote file has named it, and the FSA rating is a 4 rather than a 5.
