Prufrock Coffee
A World Barista Champion opened this bar on Leather Lane in 2011, and the guest roasts still change over the top of the house Square Mile.
Why go
Gwilym Davies won the World Barista Championship in 2009 and co-founded Prufrock with his friend Jeremy Challender two years later. European Coffee Trip calls him "a pioneer of the speciality coffee in London" and notes he stayed on as a certified competition judge (ref). He has run a training centre outside Prague since at least 2018, so treat the title as the reason this bar exists rather than a claim about who is pulling shots today.
What is on the bar is checkable. Sinéad Cranna, writing for The Infatuation in September 2024: "There's a rotation of featured guests, fail-safe Square Mile roasts, and fun events like espresso flights" (ref). A house roaster you commit to plus a guest bar that moves is the pair of signals that tells you someone is buying with attention. The training school is the third: barista courses run out of the same building, and their posters have been on the walls since at least 2019.
The room is wide, light and tiled, with leather-backed banquettes, and it opens at half past seven on weekdays.
The food is the weaker half and the entry will not pretend otherwise. Kelly Pigram, giving it four stars for Time Out, found the veggie eggs benedict "didn't blow us away either. The cakes were the better option" (ref).
One accolade, correctly dated. Prufrock was named Best Independent Coffee Shop in Europe at the European Coffee Awards, and the venue's own announcement of that win is from November 2012. Search results routinely attach it to 2024. It is fourteen years old.
Order this / avoid
- Order: a flat white. Whatever guest roast is on that week, which is the reason to come back rather than come once. The Square Mile house roast if you want the version they stand behind daily. The decaf, which is a real recommendation here and almost nowhere else. Cake from the counter.
- Avoid: treating it as a brunch destination. Evenings and early Sundays, because it shuts by 5pm at the latest. Building a morning around an espresso flight without checking it is on.
What locals & experts say
- Kelly Pigram, Time Out London, 19 September 2019 (4 out of 5, Recommended): "the coffee is practically perfect: my flat white was delightfully smooth and creamy with a perfect coffee-art swan swirled on to the froth on top." On the room: "a spacious, light and bright café that serves brunch but specialises in caffeine; coffee beans, coffee merchandise and posters for barista training courses line the walls." ref
- The critical line, from the same review: "A veggie eggs benedict with soft poached eggs and bitter greens didn't disappoint, but it didn't blow us away either. The cakes were the better option." ref
- Sinéad Cranna, The Infatuation, 5 September 2024, carried in their 22 best coffee shops in London: "There's a rotation of featured guests, fail-safe Square Mile roasts, and fun events like espresso flights. We're big fans of the smooth, rich decaf and the easy-drinking half-caff." Her piece carries no score because the outlet does not rate coffee shops. ref
- European Coffee Trip, June 2018, on the founder: "Gwilym is known as a pioneer of the speciality coffee in London and mainly as a co-founder of Prufrock Coffee together with his longtime friend Jeremy Challender." ref

Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: none. His saved-places export carries this row with an empty note. The master list's line about a Leather Lane specialty-coffee pioneer came from a later enrichment pass, not from him.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
should-visit — Worth the detour if you care about coffee, and worth nothing much if you are after brunch. A World Barista Champion built this bar: Gwilym Davies took the 2009 title and co-founded Prufrock on Leather Lane in 2011 with Jeremy Challender, and European Coffee Trip calls him a pioneer of speciality coffee in London. What is on the bar now is the part that matters. Square Mile is the house roast and there is a running rotation of guest roasters over the top of it, plus espresso flights and a barista school on the premises, which is the whole set of craft signals this category has. Sinéad Cranna's line for The Infatuation is the accurate summary: the place is all about the enjoyment of the brew, and their decaf and half-caff are worth ordering on purpose, which almost nowhere else in London can claim. Time Out gave it four stars in 2019 and their reviewer's flat white came out 'practically perfect'. The same reviewer found the eggs benedict unremarkable, and that is the honest shape of a visit: order coffee, add cake, skip the plate. It stops short of must-visit because the last number anyone put on it is seven years old.
