Redemption still keeps and propagates its own yeast, a culture that came from Scottish & Newcastle in Edinburgh and has been adapted in Tottenham since 2010.
Why go
Andy Moffat was a banker in Glasgow, read Sam Calagione's book about building Dogfish Head, went to Brewlab in Sunderland, and sold his first beer from an industrial estate near the Lea Valley in February 2010. That made Redemption the first brewery in Tottenham, which now has a cluster of them, and one of the first of the current London wave (Des de Moor). It started on a 20hl plant bought secondhand from Slater's in Stafford and moved in 2016 to a bigger unit on the same estate with a 50hl Moeschle brewhouse. CAMRA records the same jump in barrels, twelve to thirty, which is a useful independent check on both. The position that separates it from its neighbours is session-strength cask, around 80% of what it makes, some of it going out in 18-gallon kilderkins1. The taproom opens on Spurs home fixtures and closes around kick-off.
Order this / avoid
- Order: Hopspur at 4.5% off the handpump, which is always on. Solar, the session pale, which is the permanent keg. Trinity at 3% if you want the bottom of the range, because a brewery that lives at session strength has to make the small beers work. Take cans or a mini-keg home, since you cannot stay for the game.
- Avoid: any day without a fixture. And do not arrive expecting to watch the match here, because there is no television and closing is around kick-off (CAMRA).

Good to know
- Where: Unit 16 Compass West Estate, West Road, Tottenham N17 0XL, at the bottom of Northumberland Park and a short walk from the stadium.
- When it is actually open: all weekend Spurs home games in the season, from 11am, and from 4pm for evening kick-offs. Some midweek home games. Both annual NFL games at the stadium and some rugby. Outside that, check with the brewery or go to the pub instead.
- Booking: none needed. The brewery says there is room inside and out.
- Where to drink the beer on a normal day: the Antwerp Arms, opposite Bruce Castle Museum in Tottenham, which the brewery now runs as well.
- Hygiene: the FSA register lists the premises as Exempt, which is the correct status for a brewery that does not handle food. It is not a rating and not a finding.5

Verdict

It came out of Scottish & Newcastle in Edinburgh and has been propagated and adapted in Tottenham since Andy Moffat sold the first beer in February 2010, making this the first brewery in what is now a whole brewing district. About 80% of the output is session-strength cask, some of it in 18-gallon kilderkins, which is a deliberately unfashionable position for a brewery of its generation and it is why Hopspur is on a handpump rather than a font. The taproom is the catch. It opens for Spurs home games and shuts around kick-off, there is no television, and outside the football season there is essentially nothing. So this is a stop rather than a send: go if you are at the match, take cans home, and drink the same beer any other day at the Antwerp Arms, the community-owned pub the brewery now runs a few streets away.
