Nothing here is pre-batched. Every drink is built to order off a one-page list reprinted each day with the date and that night's bartenders' names on it, and the Satan's Manhattan follows the standard recipe but gets its weight from freezing the ingredients first (The World's 50 Best Bars 2025; Europe's 50 Best Bars 2026; Tower Hamlets Slice).

Why go

Kevin Armstrong opened it in late 2013 behind an unmarked door on Cambridge Heath Road, and it has been climbing since: 29th on the World's 50 Best Bars list in 2024, 21st in 2025, and 11th in Europe's 50 Best Bars 2026. The menu is one side of A4 in four sections, Fizzy, Short, Long and Cocktails, put together by whoever is working that night out of a repertoire the awards body counts at 900 classics, and every juice is squeezed the same day (Tower Hamlets Slice; 50 Best 2025). Because nothing is pre-mixed, you can ask for a drink your way and get it, which is the practical payoff of all that extra labor. The room runs on exposed brick, vintage French drinks posters, old-school hip-hop and a cast of taxidermy that includes an albino peacock overhead and a stuffed badger holding a cocktail shaker.

Order this / avoid

• Order: the East 8 Hold-Up, vodka, Aperol, pineapple and lime, which Armstrong invented and 50 Best calls a neo-classic, with the warning that the story behind the name is not repeatable here1. Then the Satan's Manhattan, built on Knob Creek, vermouth and bitters (Time Out). If you want the ridiculous one, the Miami Vice is a strawberry daiquiri and a pina colada poured so they sit side by side in the glass rather than mixing.
• Avoid: the internet. There is no online booking, WE WELCOME RESERVATIONS, BUT ONLY BY TELEPHONE6, and Tower Hamlets Slice warns the place will be rammed even on a Tuesday. Also skip it as a dinner plan: the food list is a scotch egg, charcuterie and a cheese toastie.

• Tower Hamlets Slice, David Bard (Nov 2024), the borough's worker-owned paper: his verdict on an 11-year-old bar was still as good as ever, and the detail he singles out is the service, the impeccable level of knowledgeable, amicable yet hands-off service that feels increasingly rare in London. His closing placement of it: It's by a petrol station in E2 and calls itself 'your neighbourhood cocktail bar'.3
• Time Out London, Lisa Wright (July 2025), 5 out of 5: Looking every bit a down-and-out dive bar from the outside, you shouldn't judge Satan's Whiskers by its cover. Inside, there's hip hop on the stereo, a smartly modish setting, vintage French posters on the walls and some of the best cocktails to be found in Bethnal Green.4
• Coral Anderson of Swift, in Time Out's seven-expert martini poll (June 2026): her nomination for the best martini in London went here, to what the piece calls a Bethnal Green cocktail bar known for serving top-notch classics.5
• The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, Josh Ong: No. 21, and the reason given is method. Armstrong's bar has become a beacon of how bars could, and to some, should, be run, with some of the best drinks-making in the industry at the counter.1
• How deep the list goes is disputed: 50 Best puts the classics repertoire at 900, while Time Out reports the menus of a single year carrying "a carousel of more than 400 cocktails." Both figures are from 2025 and neither outlet shows its working.
• Local rec: Jeff has it as "A world's best bar." REAL.

Good to know

• Timing: open seven days from 5pm "till late Sunday to Thursday, a little later Friday & Saturday" (venue). Time Out prints 5pm to midnight daily.
• Booking: by phone only, on 020 7739 8362. They take walk-ins and call reservations "recommended but not essential" (venue), though Europe's 50 Best notes bookings go "over the phone" and the local paper says book anyway.
• Where: 343 Cambridge Heath Road, E2 9RA, between Bethnal Green tube and Cambridge Heath overground. The FSA has it registered across 343-345. Look for red neon over an unmarked door; by day the shutters are down and covered in graffiti.
• Price: $$, and Time Out rates it 2 of 4. No cocktail price is published, so that tier is the guide.
• Dietary: nothing published. No allergen, vegan or gluten-free statement on the venue site.
• Hygiene: FSA rating 5, inspected 2 October 2024.
• Sit at the bar if you want the staff to steer you, which is Time Out's tip and matches how the daily list works.

Craft signals (cocktails: a daily list off a deep repertoire)

This is the rare case where depth and rotation are the same fact. The list is printed daily and drawn from a 900-strong classics repertoire, so the card in your hand is genuinely different from last week's while the knowledge behind it took a decade to assemble. They make everything to order with juice squeezed that day, in an era when most bars of this standing pre-batch. Two signals, both drink-side: the daily-print practice itself, and the World's 50 Best Bars placings through 2024 and 2025, which is peer voting rather than a crowd rating.

must-visit — A bar that climbed from 29th to 21st on the world list, took 11th in Europe in 2026, and does it by building every drink to order off an A4 sheet reprinted daily, at $$. The craft case is specific: no pre-batching, juice squeezed the same day, a Manhattan that beats the standard recipe by freezing the ingredients, and a house original in the East 8 Hold-Up that other bars now pour. The room seats you under an albino peacock and plays old hip-hop while a bartender who is named on your menu asks what you actually like. That combination of technique, price and unpretentiousness is rarer than any of the three alone.
