The Hope
The regulars bought this pub. They formed 48 West Limited when it faced closure in 2009, took the lease in 2010 and bought the freehold in 2015, which is why the bar is free of tie and can pour anything from anywhere (CAMRA, The Hope).
Why go
Free of tie is the operative fact. A tied London pub buys what its brewery sells it; The Hope buys from whoever is brewing well that month, which is how a suburban pub runs two permanent ales, five rotating guests, three real ciders and eight keg fonts at once (CAMRA, The Hope). The permanent pair are Downton New Forest Ale and Windsor & Eton Knight of the Garter. CAMRA has named it Greater London Pub of the Year seven times, the most recent in 2025, and the Sutton branch gave it the 2026 title (Time Out). The room is set up for drinking and talking: a piano in the conservatory, no gaming machines, no television, no music through the speakers.
Order this / avoid
- Order: work the five guest handpumps, since they are the whole reason for the ownership structure, and take a half of the real cider between them. Green Drinks runs on the first Wednesday of each month and the pub holds its own beer festival.
- Avoid: arriving hungry in the evening. The kitchen closes at 2.45pm and only pot meals run through to 10pm (CAMRA).
What locals & experts say
- CAMRA (pub entry): run
by beer enthusiasts for beer enthusiasts,
withtwo regular ales, five changing guest ales and craft keg beers. There is a piano in the conservatory room but no fruit machines, TV or muzak.
1 - CAMRA Greater London Pub of the Year (2025), reported by Time Out: Andrea Briers, CAMRA's Pub of the Year Co-ordinator, said
It is a real pleasure to announce this year's top 16 pubs, each of which has demonstrated exceptional quality, warmth and dedication to their communities.
2 - Inside Croydon (21 August 2025): covered the win and the customer-ownership model that produced it.4
Good to know
- Timing: noon to 11pm Monday to Saturday, noon to 10.30pm Sunday. Kitchen to 2.45pm.
- Booking: walk-in. The conservatory takes a group.
- Access: step-free entry through the car park, no internal steps, accessible WC (CAMRA).
- Dietary: nothing published on allergens, gluten-free or vegan options.
- Location: 48 West Street, Carshalton SM5 2PR, about ten minutes on foot from Carshalton station and roughly half an hour by train from Victoria or London Bridge.
Craft signals (beer: rotation plus a stack of cask-quality awards)
Three signals, all about the glass. CAMRA's own description is two regulars against five rapidly changing guests supplemented by craft keg, and the branch has voted it Greater London Pub of the Year seven times, most recently 20251. Those are cask-quality awards, which is drink-craft evidence rather than the heritage kind. Untappd's public feed on 30 July 2026 shows five straight pours from five unrelated small breweries6. And the structural reason all of that is possible is the 2015 freehold buyout: no tie, so no contract dictates the cellar.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Camra pub of the year." REAL.
Verdict
must-visit — Plan the afternoon around this one, because what is in the glass here is judged the best in Greater London and has been seven times. Being customer-owned and free of tie is the mechanism: the cellar runs two regulars against five rapidly changing guest ales from anywhere in the country, eight keg fonts and three real ciders, with nothing bought to a brewery contract. CAMRA's Greater London Pub of the Year title in 2025 was the seventh, and Sutton Pub of the Year 2026 sits under it; those are verdicts on cellarmanship, not on decor. Untappd's public feed on 30 July 2026 backs it structurally, five consecutive pours from five unrelated small breweries with nothing repeating. The kitchen stops at 2:45pm and there is no television, fruit machine or piped music, which tells you what the room is for. Thirty minutes on a train from central London is the price of admission and it is worth it.
