The Scotch Malt Whisky Society

Over 500 single casks stand behind this bar, every one of them bottled at cask strength under a distillery code rather than a brand name, and none of them poured anywhere else.

Why go

The Society formalised in 1983 around Pip Hills buying a cask and splitting it among friends, and it still bottles one cask at a time, labelled by code and shelved by flavour so the distillery name never does the choosing for you. The London members' room opened in this Edwardian building on Greville Street in 1999 and celebrated 25 years there in 2024 (The Whiskey Wash). The room's own count is over 500 exclusive single malts from across Scotland (and beyond) (SMWS), and the list does not sit still: a new Outturn goes out every month, the June 2026 release went live on 23 June, and Greville Street runs the previews before the bottles reach anyone else. Upstairs there is a tasting room for private hire that non-members can book.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: a dram from a flavour profile you would not normally pick. The codes hide the distillery, which takes the brand bias out of the decision, and the month's Outturn is the part of the list that will be gone next month.
  • Avoid: turning up for a meal. The venue states it plainly: We do not offer lunch or dinner options.1

What locals & experts say

  • The Whiskey Wash (Beth Squires, September 2024), marking 25 years of the room, quoting general manager Simone Malavolta: We have built an incredible community of like-minded whisky fans over the years, many of whom have developed life-long friendships over a few drams. The anniversary bottling, A Silver Darling, was distilled in 1999, the year the room opened, aged 19 years in an Oloroso sherry butt and finished five more in a first-fill Pedro Ximenez hogshead.2
  • Whisky Intelligence (June 2026), on what a monthly Outturn actually reads like, quoting the Society's own tasting notes: A splash of white vermouth and strawberry bonbons bobbing in chai tea, and Sooty, grassy and enticingly dank on the nose, this came across like a great barbecue accompaniment.3
  • No independent verdict on this room. Every quote above comes from the Society or from trade press covering the Society, and no chef or bartender in our 589-vote London corpus names it. A members-only club is hard to review from outside, and the entry says so rather than borrowing the Glasgow room's reviews.

Good to know

  • Sites: the Society runs 28 Queen Street in Edinburgh, The Vaults at 87 Giles Street in Leith, 40 Bath Street in Glasgow, and this room, 19 Greville Street, EC1N 8SQ, about 250m from Farringdon. The Glasgow room is a separate entry with a bigger gantry and a real kitchen, so pick on that rather than on the name.
  • Access: members only, 18 and over, and a member can sign in up to three guests. Booking needs an active membership number, and the Society strongly recommends booking.
  • Timing: Tuesday to Friday 3pm to 11pm, Saturday noon to 9pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Last drinks 45 minutes before close.
  • Food: none beyond nibbles. Eat first.
  • Dress: the members' charter asks for no flip-flops and shorts tailored to knee length.
  • Hygiene: Camden rated the premises 3 on 3 February 2026, with all three components at 10 where higher is worse. Generally satisfactory. The register carries the business as Scottish Malt Whisky Society, which is the council's spelling.5

Craft signals (whisky: depth first, with a monthly release programme on top)

Depth is the axis here and the numbers are the argument: over 500 single casks in the room, each bottled at cask strength without colouring or chill filtration, each one a cask nobody else can pour. Stability in a list like that is the achievement rather than decay. On top of it sits movement, which is why this carries evolution: programme rather than nothing: the Society releases a fresh Outturn every month, a parallel Glasgow pass counted 28 bottlings in March 2026, 16 in May and 24 in June, and Greville Street's own calendar runs Outturn previews, masterclasses and one-off nights such as a cheese and whisky evening on 7 March 20264.

Jeff's take (his words)

  • Note: Saved with no note; the note on my list belongs to the Glasgow room.

Verdict

should-visit — This is worth the detour for what is in the glass, and worth knowing which Society room you are walking into. Every bottle here is a single cask at cask strength, uncoloured and unfiltered, labelled with a distillery code instead of a brand and shelved by flavour, and the Greville Street gantry holds over 500 of them. That is depth you cannot replicate, and it keeps moving: a new Outturn lands every month and this room runs the previews, so what is open on a Tuesday in June was not open in May. The Edwardian building has been the Society's London home since 1999. What holds it a rung below the Glasgow room is specific rather than vague. Glasgow carries over 850 casks and a kitchen the Scotsman scored 8 out of 10; Greville Street states plainly that it serves no lunch or dinner, shuts Sunday and Monday, and opens at 3pm on a weekday. Add a membership door and this is a planned evening for someone who cares about whisky, which is exactly what a detour means.

Order

  • A cask-strength Society single cask, chosen off the flavour profile instead of the distillery name
  • Whatever landed in this month's Outturn, since the previews happen in this room before the bottles go out
  • A dram from a distillery you would never have ordered by name, which is what the numbered codes are for
  • A craft beer or a cocktail off the short list, for whoever you brought who does not drink whisky

At a glance

  • Booking: book ahead
  • Timing: closed mon, closed sun, dinner, bookings essential
  • Best for: drinks, date, solo, groups ok
