Jeff's note

The Stranded

The bar is thirteen meters of Czech-built joinery fitted with the side-pour taps you would otherwise have to be in Prague to drink from, and the Budvar comes in two-thirds tankards rather than pints so the foam has room (CAMRA, surveyed August 2025).

Why go

Bloomsbury Leisure Group opened it in late July 2025, and they already run Euston Tap and Piccadilly Tap, so the mainline-station beer bar is the house form. This one sits in the eastern corner of the West Strand building, a triangular island block that Nash planned and William Herbert built in 1830-32, and which Historic England lists at Grade II* as "the only remaining example of Nash's Regent Street manner." The Budvar dispense is the left-hand end of the bar: Original, Nefiltr, Dark and a 0.0%, poured by tapsters three ways, with glass washing and cooling built in alongside. The four cask handpumps sit at the other end against the rear wall rather than on the bar, and CAMRA's survey notes they lean toward northern English breweries with Timothy Taylor a frequent guest. Five rotating kegs sit between them on a T-bar, often from smaller brewers. The room takes about 300 people across separate areas on the corner site, and there is a Liu Xiaomian noodle residency working a dedicated 20-cover dining space.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: a Hladinka, which in the pub's own words is the classic. Three parts beer, one part dense wet foam.3 Then a Šnyt, a short pour with two fingers of dense foam. The taster's choice. If you want the local move, order a Mlíko, almost all foam, sweet, silky and made to be drunk in one go. From the noodles, the Chongqing xiaomian or the hot and sour glass noodles. From the casks, ask what northern brewery is on.
  • Avoid: Sunday, when the doors stay shut. Avoid the noodles if a hygiene score bothers you, since Westminster rated the residency 2 out of 5 on 3 June 2026, and read that number properly: its food-hygiene component was a perfect 0 and the score is driven by a structural 15.

What locals & experts say

  • CAMRA, West London branch (surveyed 20 August 2025): on the beer, the main feature of the bar, towards its left hand end, are the Czech Budvar pilsner dispenses with Original, Nefiltr (unfiltered), Dark, 0.0% and more. These are served in two-thirds measures in larger tankards, to accommodate a good head. On cost, Prices are relatively inexpensive for the West End of London.1
  • CAMRA, on the room: Carved out within the Grade II* edifice the customer area is spacious, light and airy, taking best advantage of the corner site with various discrete areas, some separated by steps.1
  • Newsquest London (Holly Brencher, 16 July 2025): the taps are rare side-pour taps, typically only found in Prague, and the Budvar range is served by trained tapsters alongside the rotating keg lines and cask ales. Note this piece is syndicated copy carried under the group's London mastheads rather than local reporting, so it records the launch claims rather than an independent verdict.2
  • No critic has reviewed it. Bar Magazine covered the opening and returns a 403 to the fetcher. Nothing from Time Out, Vittles, London Centric or Pub & Bar could be read.
  • Local rec: on Jeff's list. REAL.

Good to know

  • Where: 430 Strand, WC2R 0QN, opposite Charing Cross station and a short walk from Trafalgar Square, Somerset House and Covent Garden. The block also holds Coutts Bank.
  • Access: there is a step-free entrance, and it is the one round the corner on William IV Street rather than the door on the Strand. Some areas inside are separated by steps.
  • Hours: 3pm to 10pm Monday and Tuesday, noon to 10pm Wednesday to Saturday, closed Sunday.
  • The licence: no alcohol before 10am Monday to Saturday, none before noon on Sunday, and none within twenty minutes of closing.
  • Taps: fourteen in total, broken out by the pub as four Budvar lagers, five guest kegs and four guest casks.
  • Measures: the Budvar pilsners are two-thirds, not pints, by design.
  • Groups: around 300 seats. This is one of the few venues in this batch that genuinely absorbs a crowd.
  • Food: the Liu Xiaomian residency, 20 covers, Chongqing wheat noodles and hot and sour glass noodles.
  • Dietary: nothing published by either business. The Budvar list does include a 0.0%.
  • Hygiene: the pub's own FSA record is awaiting a first inspection. The noodle residency is rated 2, Westminster, inspected 3 June 2026, on penalty scores of Hygiene 0, Structural 15 and Confidence in Management 54.

Craft signals (a dispense programme and a rotating kitchen residency)

Two signals, and neither is a tap count. The first is dispense as craft: rare Czech side-pour taps typically only found in Prague, three pour styles, two-thirds tankards sized for foam, trained tapsters and dedicated glass washing, from the group behind the Euston and Piccadilly Taps. The second is the residency: a Liu Xiaomian noodle kitchen with its own 20-cover dining area, which is a guest operator in the room rather than a menu, plus five rotating keg lines and four cask lines bought from northern English brewers rather than the obvious London names. Programme is the right label because both the kitchen and the keg lines change hands on a schedule while the Budvar tanks stay put on purpose.

Verdict

should-visit — Worth the detour for how the beer is served rather than for what it is. Bloomsbury Leisure Group, who run Euston Tap and Piccadilly Tap, put a thirteen-meter Czech-built bar into the eastern corner of Nash's West Strand block, fitted it with the side-pour taps you normally have to be in Prague to drink from, and pour Budvar three ways: Hladinka, Snyt and Mliko. The pilsner comes in two-thirds tankards so the head has room, and there is dedicated glass washing and cooling alongside. Four cask handpumps lean northern English with Timothy Taylor a regular, five rotating kegs favor smaller brewers, and CAMRA calls the prices relatively inexpensive for the West End, which for the Strand is remarkable. It seats around 300 and there is a Liu Xiaomian noodle residency doing Chongqing xiaomian. It closes at 10pm and all day Sunday, and the residency's hygiene rating is 2 on a structural score, which is what holds it below the top rung.

Order

  • A Hladinka pour of Budvar Original from the side-pour taps, served in a two-thirds tankard
  • A Mliko, the mug of sweet wet foam Czech drinkers order
  • A Snyt if you want the short pour with two fingers of dense foam
  • Whatever northern English cask is on the four handpumps; Timothy Taylor turns up often
  • Chongqing xiaomian from the Liu Xiaomian residency
