Werewolf Beer
Rich White was head brewer at the London Brewing Company before he opened his own arch in Camden Town, and he brews once a week on four fermenters, two of them bought secondhand from the House Brewery (London Drinker, May 2022).
Why go
White moved to London from New York and calls the operation an American Brewery in London, which is also a joke about the film. The site is a railway arch on Randolph Street holding the brewery, a small taproom and an outside yard with a carriage from a vintage amusement-park ghost train in it, which you are invited to ride. Christine Cryne's CAMRA visit records the murals and effigies inside and notes that the beer was all draught keg at the time with a canning line still to come. Getting the place open took years: Camden's licensing committee granted the licence in March 2021 only after neighbors objected about street drinking by the canal, and White spent the hearing explaining his business model to the room. "This is where taprooms come in. This is standard practice and standard business model in the US and across the rest of London right now there are nearly 100 breweries operating on this premise." The taproom finally opened in May 2022.
Order this / avoid
- Order: Psychobilly, the 4.8% American pale ale, or Horrorshow, the rye IPA at 6.1%. Moonstomp is a rice lager at 4.5% and Creepster an American brown IPA at 5.1%. Stray Cat is the 3.4% session ale, and the same five have been the core range since 2022. Seasonals and experimentals run alongside, which the brewery says are built around color from unusual ingredients.
- Avoid: asking for cask. CAMRA flags cask ale as not available here, so the beer is keg and cans. Also avoid a Monday, when the taproom is shut, and a late night, since it closes at 9pm.
What locals & experts say
- Christine Cryne, London Drinker (CAMRA, 25 May 2022):
The brewery, close to Camden Road Overground station, is another one in a railway arch and houses both the brewery and a small tap room with an outside yard in which sits a carriage from a ghost train. But Rich, who is a lover of horror films, has extended the spooky features to the brewery itself, as can be seen by the murals and effigies.
1 - Rich White, quoted by Richard Osley, Camden New Journal (22 March 2021):
We're producing a premium product. This is not a five-four pack, special brew type thing.
On his customers:Beer buyers are fanatical, they enjoy the product, like people who buy whisky.
2 - CAMRA, North London branch:
The brewing kit has now been installed and Werewolf's own beers are now on tap, 4 types plus beer in cans. Plenty of seating, in and out plus at times a huge TV screen which at the time of the visit was showing films. Somewhat eclectic items in the outside space, visit and you will see!
The record is flagged cask ale not available.3 - Nobody has written about the taproom since 2022. Time Out's list of London taprooms does not include it, and no 2025 or 2026 coverage could be found. Treat the descriptions above as four years old.
- Local rec: on Jeff's list. REAL.
Good to know
- Where: Arch 87, Randolph Street, Camden Town, NW1 0SR. Camden Road overground is a hundred meters away. This is Camden Town, not Kentish Town, though Kentish Town is the nearest National Rail station at a kilometer and Werewolf did run an earlier nanobrewery there.
- Hours as CAMRA has them: closed Monday, 4pm to 9pm midweek, noon to 9pm Saturday, 2pm to 9pm Sunday. CAMRA's hours table does not extract cleanly, so check the brewery's own site.
- Booking: tables and events can be booked through the brewery's site, which is worth doing for a group.
- The yard: garden seating, eclectic salvage, and the ghost-train carriage.
- Events: music, horror and comedy nights year round per the brewery. Note that Camden's original 2021 licence banned live music, so the licence has clearly been varied since.
- Food: none. Snacks only.
- Dietary: nothing published.
- Hygiene: rating 4, Camden, last inspected 26 April 2022, which is stale but is what the register holds4.
Craft signals (beer: a deliberately steady core range)
The honest reading here is a fixed range, and the entry already argues why holding it is a deliberate position. Five American-style beers brewed weekly on site cover a real spread, from a 3.4% session ale to a 6.1% rye IPA, and the lineup has held for four years under a brewer who ran the London Brewing Company's brewhouse. CAMRA's record confirms the shape, four beers through a glass partition onto the Regent's Canal. Static is a description of the beer list and not of the room: the programme of music, horror and comedy nights is where this taproom actually moves, and that sits under Experience.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "American beer in Camden" REAL, and accurate on both counts. The brewer is a New Yorker and the arch is in Camden Town.
Verdict
could-visit — Go if you want American-style beer made in London by someone who knows what he is doing, and you are amused by drinking it next to a ghost-train carriage. Rich White was head brewer at the London Brewing Company before moving from New York to open his own arch in Camden Town in 2022, and he brews once a week on four fermenters, two of them bought secondhand from the House Brewery. The core range has not changed in four years: Stray Cat at 3.4%, Moonstomp rice lager, Psychobilly APA, Creepster brown IPA and Horrorshow rye IPA at 6.1%. There is no cask, no kitchen, and it shuts at 9pm with Monday closed. Nobody has written about the place since 2022, so the case for a detour rests on the beer and the yard rather than on anything current.
