Wheatsheaf

Rail-bridge engineering works above Borough Market kept this pub shut for three years, which is why the room reads newer than the market it faces.

Why go

It reopened in December 2012 after that closure, revamped with walls clad floor to ceiling in reclaimed wood and black-and-white photographs of the market (Time Out). It sits under the railway bridge on Stoney Street, directly opposite Borough Market, with a courtyard outside. What has changed since is the offering. In 2013 it was a Young's house with the beer limited by the brewery tie and food ordered on a card and collected from a camper van in the yard. The venue now advertises craft and draught beers alongside classic cask ales, spirits and cocktails, and the kitchen does pizzas and burgers (Wheatsheaf). Nobody independent has written about it since the change.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: a pint, and take it to the courtyard side if the room is heaving. A cask ale, since the pub keeps them alongside the craft lines. A pizza if you are staying.
  • Avoid: eating here when you are already standing in Borough Market. Time Out's conclusion was that this is a good bet for a pint and a breather if you're trawling the market, but there are many better places to eat right on its doorstep, and the market has not got worse since1.

What locals & experts say

  • Time Out London (4 March 2013), three stars out of five, unbylined so this is the masthead: Rail-bridge engineering works above Borough Market forced the closure of this pub for three years; it's been revamped and reopened in December 2012 with a whole new look. Its verdict: a good bet for a pint and a breather if you're trawling the market, but there are many better places to eat right on its doorstep. Thirteen years old, and the tied beer and camper-van food it describes are both gone.1
  • Time Out also supplies the warning anyone using this page needs: Confusingly, there's another Wheatsheaf pub round the corner in Southwark Street.1
  • The venue's own current position: an outstanding range of craft and draught beers, classic cask ales, and a carefully curated selection of spirits, with craft pizzas and messy burgers. That is marketing, and it is the only account of the current operation that exists.2
  • No chef vote, no beer-guide record located, and nothing bylined since 2013. Searched 1 August 2026. That is why this entry's confidence is low.

Good to know

  • Where: 6 Stoney Street, Borough SE1 9AA, under the bridge, opposite the market. London Bridge station.
  • Which one: not the Wheatsheaf at Hop Cellars on Southwark Street, which is a separate pub with its own FSA record.
  • Timing: Saturday 10am to midnight; food served noon to 10pm.
  • Booking: worth it at market times, and there is a double-decker bus available for private hire.
  • Hygiene: the FSA records rating 5, inspected 13 October 2025, with all three components at 0, which is the cleanest score the scheme gives.3
  • Michelin: not recorded either way. Our cached Michelin data is stars only.

Verdict

could-visit — Engineering works on the rail bridge above Borough Market shut this pub for three years, and it reopened in December 2012 clad in reclaimed wood with the market's photographs on the walls, which is why it reads newer than everything around it. It sits under the bridge on Stoney Street directly opposite the market, with a courtyard, and it now pours craft and cask alongside cocktails and does pizzas and burgers rather than the camper-van food service it reopened with. The verdict that still holds is Time Out's, from 2013: a good bet for a pint and a breather while you are trawling the market, and there are many better places to eat right on its doorstep. That is exactly the right use for it. Take the pint, take the courtyard, and eat in the market. Do not confuse it with the other Wheatsheaf round the corner on Southwark Street.

Order

  • A pint on the courtyard side, which is the reason to pick this over the market stalls when it is busy
  • One of the pizzas, which is what the kitchen has been built around since the food changed
  • A cask ale, since the pub still keeps them alongside the craft taps

At a glance

  • Booking: book ahead
  • Timing: all day, open late
  • Best for: drinks, groups ok, lunch, quick
