Restaurante María
Piti Carretero puts a different stew on every day at Restaurante María, and on Sundays it is a soupy lobster rice.
Why go
Piti Carretero cooks a Castilian menu in a room a block from the beach on the eastern side of Málaga, and her husband Enrique Rebollo runs the dining room.52 Lori Zaino explains the Castilian cooking in Andalusia: the owner is from Valladolid.1 The house dates itself to 1993: Since 1993 Piti and Enrique began this road; since then we have tried to give our people a traditional and classic menu, to eat 'as at home'.
3 The Academia Gastronómica's prize citation tells it differently. It says the pair took the baton from her parents, who opened a first restaurant in Torremolinos in the 1980s and moved it to this address some years later.2
The Academia Gastronómica de Málaga calls the kitchen cocina de fuegos y fondos, cooking of fires and stocks.5 Its 2022 prize made the room the best restaurant in the province.2 Come at lunch, because there is no other service, and come for the stew of the day before anything else.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the plato de cuchara, the spoon dish, which changes daily. The rotation runs through lentils with pork rib, Castilian cocido, oxtail, pinto beans, a chickpea and spinach potaje and fabada, the Asturian white bean and pork stew. On Sundays it is arroz caldoso con bogavante.2
- Order: the lechazo asado, milk-fed lamb roasted the Castilian way. Order it in advance, because the house roasts it to order.32 The cochinillo, roast suckling pig, is on the card too.2
- Order: the pimientos del piquillo and the potatoes, as Lori Zaino had them:
roasted peppers stuffed with the creamiest cod filling, and boiled potatoes drenched in aioli.
1 - Order: the paella, on Lori Zaino's recommendation:
Although Andalusia isn't known for paella, this is the place to order it, especially the flavor-packed version with chorizo and slices of spongy roasted zucchini.
1 - Drink: a cerveza (a beer) with the piquillos, which is how she pairs them.1
What locals & experts say
- The Infatuation (2026): Lori Zaino, in the only published account of a meal here:
Walking into Restaurante María feels like crashing a party you haven't been invited to but desperately want to attend. It's full of locals and walls lined with bullfighting photos, and don't you dare arrive without a reservation or wearing a swimsuit (even though it's a block from the beach).
1 - Academia Gastronómica de Málaga (2023): the citation that came with the 2022 prize:
Piti and Enrique offer a traditional cooking of Castilian origin, honest, emphatic, the sort with plenty of real stew, on the best fresh produce, which they treat with affection, slow fire and a lot of tradition, but without superfluous decoration.
2 - Ignacio Luque, Academia Gastronómica de Málaga:
The restaurant that never puts a foot wrong, María in Bellavista-Limonar.
4 - Award: Premio José Luis Barrionuevo al Mejor Restaurante 2022, Academia Gastronómica de Málaga.2
