Ta-Kumi Málaga
Toshio Tsutsui and Álvaro Arbeloa have cut the nigiri at Ta-Kumi since 2017, and the cutting is what Guía Repsol gave them a Sol for.
Why go
Guía Repsol gave the room a Sol in 2021 and renewed it in 2025, and the guide's praise is the cut of the nigiri and the sashimi.1 The two cooks put their own names in the sign: 'Craftsman' and 'master.' Two words that capture the spirit and essence of our house, and the union of chefs Toshio and Álvaro (TA) in one team (KUMI).
8 They opened on Calle Mundo Nuevo in 2017, uphill from the cathedral, with the Alcazaba's walls in the window.
Dani Carnero, who holds the star at Kaleja, puts his own dinner here or at Uvedoble when he wants the formal version of an evening.4 Manolo Villanueva of Utopía Ramen comes for one dish, the bluefin belly tartare.5 Dani García, who held three MICHELIN stars down the coast in Marbella, names the group for dinner too.6
Order this / avoid
- Order: the nigiri selection, the tempura roll and the amberjack tiradito. That is Guía Repsol's own three-dish recommendation.1
- Order: the bluefin belly tartare, which is what Villanueva turns up for.5
- Order: the Matsuri menu if you want the long night. It runs through a natural oyster with ponzu, toro tartare with quail yolk and truffle, and carabinero sashimi with the head roasted.2
- Avoid: turning up for the terrace without asking for it. Repsol says it is in as much demand as the counter.1
What locals & experts say
- Guía Repsol (1 Sol, 2021 and 2025): the room
stands out for its quality-to-price ratio, the quality of its raw material, the care it takes over the cut of its nigiri and sashimi, and the attention of the dining-room staff. The terrace is in as much demand as that counter where you can watch the sushiman's work in detail.
1 - Manolo Tornay, president of the Academia Gastronómica de Málaga, on the two chefs: they are
a byword for excellence, quality and the greatest respect for the produce and the tradition,
and sitting at their tableis travelling to Japan.
3 - El Español, on Dani Carnero's dinner picks (2023): for something more formal and Asian,
Ta-Kumi is the benchmark.

Good to know
- Booking: take one, and say whether you want the counter or the terrace. The house takes bookings online.
- Price: the Matsuri tasting menu was 135 euros in January 2025, and there is an à la carte card beside it.2
- Where: Calle Mundo Nuevo 4, on the slope under the Alcazaba, a few minutes from the Teatro Romano.
- Three rooms trade under this name. This is the Málaga one. The others are in Marbella, which opened in 2011, and in Madrid on Calle Claudio Coello. The Academia Gastronómica de Málaga's 2025 best-restaurant prize went to the Marbella room.2
- The standing here is a Guía Repsol Sol, held since 2021. Ignacio Luque's Málaga sweep calls the room MICHELIN-starred. The guide's Málaga stars are Kaleja, José Carlos García, Blossom and Palodú.9
Verdict
should-visit — A Repsol Sol has stood on this room since 2021, for the knife work. Take the counter and watch the sushiman work, or the terrace over the Alcazaba if you can get it. Dani Carnero eats his own dinner here when he wants something more formal. The long Matsuri menu was 135 euros in January 2025, which is the top of the range in this city.
