The Local Taphouse
The first Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular was held in this pub in February 2011 with twenty new Australian beers on. It now runs in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Auckland.
Why go
Twenty taps, and the board turns over fast enough to pour more than 400 different beers a year, which the pub claims and Concrete Playground's Tom Clift states independently (Concrete Playground). That works out to roughly a whole tap wall rebuilt every week. Steve Jeffares and Guy Greenstone opened it on Carlisle Street in 2008 and went on to build Stomping Ground; they sold GABS in 2019 to concentrate on brewing (The Crafty Pint). Around the taps sit monthly Ale Star tasting sessions and brewery showcases where beers debut before they reach anywhere else. The rooftop beer garden has an outdoor log fire and there is a second fireplace downstairs.
Order this / avoid
- Order: whatever went on most recently, and take it as a paddle if you want to read the board properly. The bottle list covers what the taps do not.
- Avoid: ordering something you can buy in a supermarket. Monday is comedy night, which is a reason to come and a reason to book a table elsewhere if you want quiet.
