Cocina Doña Paula
A hundred and twenty-five pesos buys a dish, a sopa de fideo, a litre of agua fresca and up to a kilo of tortillas. Tlaxcala recipes, on Calle 6 between the 10 and the 15.
Why go
This is a family kitchen that has been cooking the same guisos for more than twenty years, a few streets off the tourist run.1 The recipes come from Tlaxcala, with the seasoning of the center and north of the country, which is not what Playa del Carmen usually feeds you.1 Doña Paula's own answer to how the flavor holds is a staffing answer: "He tratado de conservar a la mayoría de mis cocineras para que no cambie el sabor de los guisos." (I've tried to keep most of my cooks so the flavor of the stews doesn't change.
Our translation.)1 She holds the price on purpose too, and says so plainly.1
Order this / avoid
- Order: the full 125-peso menu rather than a plate on its own. It runs a dish of your choosing, sopa de fideo, a litre of fruit agua fresca and up to a kilo of tortillas.1
- Order: the beans and the rice alongside. Doña Paula says her customers from the center and the north tell her they taste exactly like the ones at home.1
- Avoid: arriving expecting Yucatecan food. No source names a single dish on the board, so I cannot point you at one by name.
What locals & experts say
- Doña Paula, in Quintana Roo Hoy: "Tenemos más de 20 años preparando los mismos platillos y gracias a Dios la gente sigue regresando porque aquí todo se hace con el mismo sabor de siempre." (
We've been making the same dishes for more than 20 years and thank God people keep coming back, because everything here is made with the same flavor as always.
Our translation.) On the price: "Sabemos que la situación económica a veces es complicada, pero tratamos de mantener los costos porque mucha gente ya nos considera parte de su vida diaria." (We know the economy is hard sometimes, but we try to hold our costs because a lot of people already count us as part of their daily life.
Our translation.) These are the owner's words about her own kitchen, not a critic's about the food.1
Good to know
- Where: Calle 6, between Avenida 10 and Avenida 15, near the center and the tourist strip.1
- It trades under Cocina Doña Paula, which is what the business and the press both call it.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note (Jeff, on his saved list, 26 November 2023): "Local rec"
Verdict
should-visit — Jeff put this on his own list and wrote 'Local rec' beside it, which is the strongest evidence I have on any of his Playa saves and the reason this is not a listing. Quintana Roo Hoy backs it with the part that matters: recipes out of Tlaxcala, held steady for more than twenty years, in a Quintana Roo tourist town where almost nothing is. Doña Paula's own explanation of how she does it is a staffing answer rather than a recipe one, and she says her regulars tell her the beans and rice taste like home. Nobody has reviewed the cooking, so what is proven is the intent and the price, not the plate.
