Black Iron Burger
Black Iron Burger grills certified Black Angus, raised without antibiotics or hormones.1 It offers them in smaller portions too.1 The brand started on East Fifth Street in 2008.5
Why go
The kitchen's own brief is an American burger with a Spanish and Mediterranean lean. It says it buys the ingredients from around the world.1 A full bar runs behind it, with craft beer and cocktails, and DJs work it at night.1 The license holds into the small hours, and the bar's own site takes a table booking whenever you want one.13
Bryan Kim is the Infatuation's editorial lead in New York. He picked fourteen places to eat in the Garment District and left this bar off.6 I have not found a review of the West 38th Street room.
Order this / avoid
- Avoid: reading the banners on the bar's own site as current. It prints a Zagat best-burger line for 2017 and 2018. Beside it sits a TripAdvisor one for 2019 to 2022. The two customer quotes there come off a TripAdvisor handle and a Yelp handle.1
What locals & experts say
- Time Out New York, on the room that started it, 16 March 2016: it served
fine budget burgers, griddled to order by a grease-splattered cook.
The house Iron Horse ran two patties under grilled onion and horseradish cheddar. The waiter blended the chocolate shakes himself.4 - EV Grieve, the East Village news blog, in June 2022, on what became of that room: Black Iron
closed for renovations
in July 2019 and never reopened. New owners took the space with milkshakes, fries and burgers.5
Good to know
- The doors: 245 West 38th Street in Midtown West. A second trades in the Theater District at 250 West 54th Street.1
- On the same street: Kim sends Garment District drinkers to Venisalvi. It is a small wine bar on that stretch of 38th Street.6
Verdict
could-visit — Its own site takes a booking if you want one. Order a burger with a drink and expect nothing beyond that.
