Jeff's note

Boobie Trap

Kristen North opened this Bushwick corner bar in August 2014 and works the taps herself. Slow-smoked barbecue is what comes over the counter, and the opening lunch deal was half a pound of meat, two sides and a beer for $12.1

Why go

The kitchen runs pulled pork, smoked seitan and hot and cold sides. A table that does not all eat pork can still eat here.1 North works her own bar. The playlist leans on Johnny Cash. The shelves hold Slinkys and plastic dinosaurs and roller skates. Ask for a draft and she pulls the tap out of a mannequin.3

The name is the theme, and the theme is chest-related. Bryan Kim got that out of the way in one clause.4 North's own word for the place is a bartender's bar. Nothing has been written about it since 2016.1

Serena Dai reported for DNAinfo that North and her co-owner Paul King took the old Verde Coal Oven Pizza at 254 Irving Avenue in March 2015. They opened it as Pizza Party, a second room across the street.2

Order this / avoid

  • Order: the barbecue plate at lunch. Half a pound of meat, two sides and a beer went for $12 in the opening week of 2014.1
  • Order: the smoked seitan if you are the vegetarian in the group. It is on the same board as the pork.1
  • Avoid: the drafts. There are two lines, one light and one dark. North keeps the range in the fridge because the cans are colder.1

What locals & experts say

  • Bryan Kim, The Infatuation's editorial lead in New York, in December 2016: Boobie trap is small and friendly, so if you live in the area it has the potential to be your Cheers.4
  • Kristen North, to DNAinfo in 2015, on the pizza place she opened across the road: I feel like Pizza Party is Boobie Trap's kid brother.2
  • Time Out New York, in September 2014, on the barbecue: North doles out slow-smoked barbecue and pitchers of margaritas at her kitschy watering hole.3

Good to know

  • The door: the corner of Irving Avenue and Bleecker Street, a short walk from Myrtle-Wyckoff.1
  • Prices here are all from 2014, because that is the last year a source I read printed one. Happy hour then ran $3 wells and drafts and $25 pitchers.1
  • Booking: walk in.
