Burp Castle
The bartenders here shush you. That is the house rule, it is enforced on the sidewalk as well as inside, and there is a note about it on the beer taps.
Why go
The room has been open since 1992, done up as a monastery, with murals of monks behaving considerably worse than the customers are allowed to. Sonal Shah went in April 2025 and found the rule holding: the staff have mostly given up the robes and the music strays from Gregorian chant, and the shushing carries on, reaching the caged sidewalk counter as well as the room (The Infatuation).
Order this / avoid
- Order: a Belgian or a German beer, which is what Shah says the room is for.
- Avoid: the sidewalk counter if you plan to talk. It looks like the way around the rule and it is not.
What locals & experts say
- Sonal Shah, The Infatuation (1 April 2025):
Open since 1992, this monastery-themed drinking hole in the East Village is (most of the time) the quietest bar in New York.
1 - Shah on where to sit: there is more atmosphere inside, under the monk murals and a little note on the beer taps reading Please Whisper.1
Good to know
- Timing: evenings.
- Booking: walk in.
- On tap: I have not found a beer list.
Verdict
could-visit — Go early in the evening with one other person. It is no good for a group and no good after a loud night.
