Frankies 457 Spuntino

Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli opened this Carroll Gardens room in 2004 to take back their own heritage. The pasta is their grandmothers': semolina and water, no eggs.7 Willa Moore rated it 8.4 for The Infatuation in March 2025.1

Why go

The red sauce runs 13 cloves of garlic. The meatballs going into it carry pine nuts and raisins, and that is where their sweetness comes from. Moore's argument is that the salad gets you first. It is a plain pile of greens in a cipollini onion vinaigrette, bright and a little sweet off the onions.1

The kitchen is open and the brick walls hold the noise in. You eat inside the sound of somebody else's birthday.1 The parties go out back, into a converted stable with a patio, turntables and a roasting pit.4

Frank Castronovo's grandmother had no counter space. She carried the pasta board, a long piece of plywood, through to the bed and dried the garganelli there.7

The Franks built a block out of this one door. Prime Meats, a German-leaning steakhouse, came out of it, and so did the Cobble Hill coffee shop Cafe Pedlar.4 F&F Pizzeria trades two doors up at 459 Court Street in a converted garage. It cooks on the group's own olive oil and Bianco DiNapoli tomatoes.6

Order this / avoid

  • Order: the cavatelli with hot sausage and browned sage butter. Nadia Chaudhury sends Eater readers to it and Bryan Kim names it on The Infatuation's Italian guide. Time Out called it the staple back in 2010.324
  • Order: the meatballs, either solo under the sauce or stuffed into a sandwich.4
  • Order: the crostini to start. They come topped with things like olive-oil-soaked Italian tuna, or kale with a smoky harissa aioli.1
  • Order: the meatball Parm or the eggplant marinara if you came for a sandwich.3 Saveur's pick is the zucchini and pasta one, linguine cacio e pepe and a zucchini saute on pizza bianca.8
  • Avoid: following the cavatelli straight with the pappardelle and lamb ragu. Moore's warning is that the brown butter puts your palate out of action for it. Put the salad in between.1

What locals & experts say

  • Willa Moore, in The Infatuation, on the pasta: People would probably start picketing out front if that pasta ever came off the menu.1
  • Bryan Kim, The Infatuation's NYC Editorial Lead, placing it on the 28 Best Italian Restaurants In New York City beside L'Artusi and Ci Siamo: It's a great option for a not-too-stuffy special occasion meal.2
  • Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli, writing in Saveur in November 2011 about why they opened it: We knew that our grandparents made great food, but Italian-American cooking had become gimmicky: You couldn't talk about it without someone bringing up Sinatra and red-and-white checked tablecloths.7
  • Nadia Chaudhury, on Eater NY's Italian map: A picturesque backyard and a neighborhood vibe are the cherries on top at the Carroll Gardens restaurant, which launched a small empire of spots focused on well-executed Italian American classics.3
  • Sam Sifton, in his final review as restaurant critic for the New York Times, as the restaurant prints it on its own page: The best meal I had on the job? It was in the garden of Frankies 457 on a summer evening. Nothing was wrong. Everything was right.5

Good to know

  • Booking: reservations are recommended and the room takes them online.3
  • Service: the full menu runs lunch and dinner, seven days, with seasonal specials off a changing list.5
  • The quieter sibling: Kim points groups who want space to F&F Restaurant, where the tables are further apart.2
  • Take it home: the olive oil is in grocery stores and the red sauce recipe is published.1

Verdict

should-visit — Moore files Lilia and I Sodi under the toughest tables in the city and puts this one down as the no-brainer for a special occasion. Take her at it and book a birthday here.
