Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket
Wilklow Orchards brings cider and orchard fruit from Ulster County to the northwest corner of Prospect Park. GrowNYC has run this market on that plaza every Saturday since 1989.
Why go
GrowNYC calls it their Brooklyn flagship. It has fed Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights and Prospect Lefferts Gardens from the day it opened. It runs through winter as well as summer.
Cato Corner Farm brings small-batch aged raw cow's-milk cheeses over from Connecticut. Ronnybrook Farm Dairy brings milk, yogurt, butter and ice cream down from Columbia County. Kimchee Harvest makes farmstead kimchi in Delaware County. Bread Alone, Lost Bread Co and Knead Love Bakery have all pitched here on one morning, so you can build a whole picnic without leaving the plaza.
Wilklow's stall carries orchard and small fruit, cider, baked goods, jams, beef and pork. Autumn is when to come for the apples and the cider.
The roster for Saturday is posted weekly and the stalls change, so read it the night before.
Order this / avoid
- Buy: cider and apples from Wilklow when the season turns, cheese from Cato Corner, dairy from Ronnybrook, and a loaf from whichever of the three bakers is out.
- Avoid: any day but Saturday. This is a one-day market.
Good to know
- Paying: cash, debit and credit, plus SNAP EBT with a two-dollar Health Buck for every two dollars spent, up to ten dollars a day. FMNP, FreshConnect, Healthfirst OTC on select plans and Greenmarket Bucks are all taken.
- Jeff put this on the list himself, 3 September 2026.
- Where: the plaza at the northwest entrance to Prospect Park. GrowNYC puts it steps from the Brooklyn Public Library, the Brooklyn Museum and the Botanic Garden.
Jeff's take (his words)
Not on Jeff's saved list. He named the place on 3 September 2026, in the paragraph he wrote on what New York is to him, and asked for it.
Verdict
should-visit — Bring the kids and stay a while. GrowNYC runs cooking demonstrations, educational programs and family activities on this plaza alongside the stalls, which is the half of a greenmarket morning a supermarket cannot copy. Buy the cheese, the bread and the fruit, then walk the whole lot into Prospect Park through the entrance the market sits on.
