Magnolia Bakery (Bleecker Street)
Carina Finn says the classic vanilla cupcake here tastes like dipping a stick of butter in a bowl of sugar, and she means it as praise.
Why go
Finn, in The Infatuation, wrote it up in March 2023 and opened by conceding the obvious. There are now around a million locations and this one draws a tourist crowd. She rates the cupcakes anyway.
The red velvet and the chocolate she calls textbook examples of the form.
The banana pudding is the better order of the two. Take it away and eat it sitting down somewhere.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the banana pudding first. Then a red velvet or chocolate cupcake, or the classic vanilla if butter and sugar is what you want.
- Avoid: treating a branch visit as this one. Bleecker Street is the shop with the corner and the queue.
What locals & experts say
- Carina Finn, The Infatuation, 9 March 2023:
Magnolia didn't get famous by serving dry, flavorless cupcakes... Their beloved banana pudding is also very much worth the hype.

Good to know
- Doors: 401 Bleecker Street is the original. Every other Magnolia is a different shop.
- Jeff put this on the list himself, 3 September 2026.
- Getting in: a counter and a queue, and no way to skip it.
Jeff's take (his words)
Not on Jeff's saved list. He named the place on 3 September 2026, in the paragraph he wrote on what New York is to him, and asked for it.
Verdict
could-visit — Bring visitors here, and bring them on a birthday, which is what The Infatuation files the shop under. Finn calls it charming in an I love New York way, her words and not mine.
