Nene's Taqueria
Chef Andres cooks birria off Puebla family recipes,3 and on Degraw Street it comes as a taco, a ramen, an empanada and a pizza.1
Why go
The family started in Bushwick. This is the second room, on a corner of Gowanus. The kitchen says the recipes came down through generations, and it presses its corn tortillas by hand.3 Carina Finn reviewed this door for The Infatuation in February 2023. Her case is about throughput. The Bushwick original kept people waiting over an hour; this room does not.1 A third Nene's trades inside Barclays Center. That one is a stall and a different door.2
Order this / avoid
- Order: the Nenes Deluxe, which puts a birria taco, a mulita and an empanada on one plate with the consomme, listed at $15.75.3
- Order: the birria pizza if the table is big. It is a quesadilla pie cut into eight, listed at $30.00, and it comes with consomme.3
- Order: the horchata. Finn names it alongside the birria.1
- Avoid: the Barclays Center stall when you want the broth. That door serves the tacos without it.2
What locals & experts say
- Carina Finn, The Infatuation (16 February 2023):
Even though this spot is small, their system is highly organized and efficient. It's not the kind of place where you'll want to linger, but you can definitely grab a seat at the red subway-tiled counter and eat as much birria as you please.

Verdict
could-visit — The cheapest way in is the Nenes Combo: three crispy birria tacos and a cup of consomme, $14.99. Start there and add if you are still hungry.
