Gourmet Haus Staudt
Joe and Lucie Staudt opened a flower shop on Broadway in 1975, and the family turned the same premises into a Bavarian Bierstube with a German market and a bottle shop behind it.1
Why go
The family puts the bar first: Always considered a bar before a restaurant, it has a thoughtfully selected German and Craft Beer line up.
1 The kitchen writes to the taps rather than the other way round, with a varied German menu, complete with rotating daily specials,
so the schnitzel and the wurst move with whatever is pouring.1 Behind the bar the market carries pickled vegetables, German import candies, deli meats and cheeses, and the bottle shop runs German beer, craft beer, ciders, spirits, meads and wines.1 Jeff put four stars on it in February 2017 for tasty German food and always an interesting selection of beers.

Order this / avoid
- Order: schnitzel or a bratwurst, and ask what the daily special is running against. The kasekrainer and the currywurst are on the same board, and pretzels come out of the same kitchen.1
- Avoid: a Saturday afternoon if the beer garden is the reason you came. Jeff's line:
It gets quite busy weekends. I wish it had a larger beer garden.

Good to know
- Timing: the Biergarten runs Monday 3pm to 8pm, Tuesday to Thursday noon to 10pm, Friday to 11pm, and weekends noon to 10pm. The store keeps its own hours: Sunday and Monday noon to 6pm, Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 8pm.1
- Booking: walk in.
- Three businesses, one address: Bierstube, market and bottle shop. You can eat, shop and take beer home in one stop.1
Jeff's take (his words)
- Order:
Tasty German food and always an interesting selection of beers.

Verdict
should-visit — Fifty years in the same family on the same street, a Bierstube with a German market and a bottle shop attached, and a rotating tap list the kitchen writes its specials against. Jeff gave it four stars and named the food and the beer, and his one complaint is that the garden is too small, which is a complaint about wanting more of it. That is a real destination on the Peninsula rather than a stop.
