Mount Eden Vineyards
The Martin Ray estate pours its Pinot, Chardonnay and Cabernet at 2,000 feet above Silicon Valley, weekdays only, by appointment.
Why go
Mount Eden calls itself one of California's original boutique wineries, and the claim has paper behind it: founded in 1945, in the lineage that began with Paul Masson and Martin Ray, the man who took winegrowing up this mountain.2 The Patterson family runs it now and farms estate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon at 2,000 feet.2 Justin Goldman's Michelin Guide county feature lists it beside Ridge among the historic wineries of the Santa Cruz Mountains, a pioneering winery that's only open to visitors during the week.

What locals & experts say
- Eric Prahl, winemaker at Rhys Vineyards, in the Michelin Guide (February 2026):
Long before California wine became synonymous with the valley floor, the Santa Cruz Mountains proved that cool, marginal mountain sites could make wines with real longevity and world-class stature — something our neighbors, like Ridge and Mount Eden, have helped establish for over a century.
A producer in the same mountains talking about his neighbors; the claim is the appellation's record, not a tasting note.1
Good to know
- Weekdays only. Tastings are appointment-only, Monday through Friday.2
- Small groups. Six guests or fewer, all 21 and over.2
Verdict
should-visit — Founded in 1945 out of the Paul Masson and Martin Ray line, this is about as close as California gets to the origin of boutique winegrowing, and that lineage is what earns the placement on thin outside evidence. Justin Goldman calls it 'a pioneering winery' in the Michelin Guide's county feature, and Eric Prahl of Rhys names it beside Ridge as proof the appellation makes wines with real longevity, a neighbor's claim disclosed as one. Tastings run weekdays only, by appointment, six people or fewer. Nobody independent has judged a current bottle, which is what keeps it a step below Ridge.
