The Manufactory Food Hall

Tartine, Cala and Kin Khao each run a counter past security in SFO's Terminal 1, open 7am to 11pm, and the morning bun is the thing worth the walk to Boarding Area A.1

Why go

When it opened in January 2019, Trevor Felch counted four counters here: Tacos Cala from Gabriela Camara, Kamin from Pim Techamuanvivit of Kin Khao, Tartine Bakery from Chad Robertson and Elisabeth Prueitt, and Coffee Manufactory with a bar attached.1 Felch wrote that the lineup put three of SF's most universally beloved, hard-working, and completely not-corporate restaurants behind a security line.1 That roster is the 2019 one; the operator's page today confirms the hall is trading daily from 7am to 11pm without naming its tenants.2

Order this / avoid

  • Order: a Tartine morning bun. It is the one item Jeff names outright: go there, and pick one up on the way out.3 At Kamin, Felch's pick is a gluten-free, Thai-style version of fried chicken that is utterly divine.1
  • Avoid: the tacos at Cala, in Jeff's words decent but overpriced -- not up to my expectations. He sends you to Gott's for a real meal.3

What locals & experts say

  • Jeff (first-hand), 21 May 2019, four stars: Decent seating area with a bar with an OK beer selection. Not bad, but not awesome. Keep walking to Gotts for food or Valencia for drinks, after you've picked up a Tartine morning bun.3
  • 7x7 (Trevor Felch, First Taste, 29 January 2019): at Tacos Cala, There's just about everything you could want to be piled on top of a corn tortilla.1

Good to know

  • Where: Terminal 1, Boarding Area A, past security. Open 7am to 11pm daily.2
  • Plan it as a pastry stop. The one instruction on the record is to buy the morning bun and eat elsewhere.3

Jeff's take (his words)

  • Order: a Tartine morning bun.3

Verdict

could-visit — Three of the best kitchens in San Francisco put counters past security in Terminal 1, and the pastry counter is genuinely worth the walk to Boarding Area A. But the only first-hand judgment on the record is Jeff's and it is lukewarm: decent but overpriced tacos, an OK beer list, and an explicit instruction to keep walking to Gott's for food. That is a stop between gates, not a reason to arrive early.

Order

  • A Tartine morning bun, which is the one thing Jeff tells you to buy here
  • Kamin's Thai-style fried chicken, which 7x7 called utterly divine
  • Coffee Manufactory at the bar end
