Bhansa Ghar
Bhansa Ghar turns its gongura curry jade green with a paste of sorrel leaves.
Why go
Pawan Kandel and Roshan Shah, who also runs Himalayan Flavor in Logan, opened Bhansa Ghar in South Salt Lake in early 2024 to cook Nepali and Indian food. Kandel told Stuart Melling of Gastronomic SLC that the name means kitchen home
in Nepali: We chose this name to evoke the warmth and comfort of home-cooked meals
(Gastronomic SLC). Melling calls it my current go-to destination for Indian and Nepali cuisine,
with a menu more expansive than their peers
(Gastronomic SLC).
Order the gongura chicken, Melling's favorite dish there and one of his best of 2024 (Gastronomic SLC). He found the sorrel gave a tongue-arresting sourness to the curry. Lest you worry, the unique profile never sags into bitter,
with onion and tomato for sweetness. He takes it with chicken thigh for the fat and calls it a rugged composition, one that eagerly affords spicier ordering
(Gastronomic SLC).
The kitchen cooks to the heat you ask for. Melling warned in 2024 that things become noticeably balmy around the midpoint, veering into scorched earth territory should you mumble something about hot
(Gastronomic SLC). Alex Springer of City Weekly found the same in 2025: Bhansa Ghar has no qualms about bringing the heat
(City Weekly).
The lunch buffet ran Monday to Saturday in 2024. Springer ate it in January 2025, when it cost $16.99. He found the butter chicken leaning on the sweetness of the tomato, making this one of the best iterations of butter chicken that I've come across
(City Weekly). He put the buffet on his list of the best dishes of 2025 (City Weekly).
Order this / avoid
- Order: the chicken jhol momo, dumplings in achar, a thin tangy sauce. Stuart Melling (Gastronomic SLC, 2024) found them seasoned
gently with garlic, ginger, and spices.
3 - Order: the chicken chilli momo, steamed if you ask. Alex Springer (City Weekly, 2025) found the filling
well seasoned
andthe exact texture you'd want from a momo filling.
7 - Order: the lamb kadai. Melling (Gastronomic SLC, 2024):
well-butchered cubes of lamb (everything is halal by the way) in a nuanced and richly seasoned gravy.
3 - Order: the do pyaza, a curry of onions cut and cooked several ways. Melling (Gastronomic SLC, 2024) hadn't found it anywhere else in Utah and called it
another cracker.
It was not on the online menu in September 2026, so ask for it.3
