Caputo's Market & Deli
Tony Caputo stocked the Italian market he opened across from Pioneer Park in 1997 on one rule: buy the best food he could find, then worry about what it cost.
Why go
Go for the muffuletta. The counter builds it on ciabatta with Genoa salami, ham, mortadella, provolone and a spicy olive salad (Caputo's). Lydia Martinez, Salt Lake Magazine's food writer, ranked it the best sandwich in Utah in 2023 and held it up against New Orleans: I once spent an entire day in search of the best Muffuletta sandwich in NOLA. Caputo's stands right up next to them as an equal
(Salt Lake Magazine).
The house sandwich splits the people who ate it. The Caputo stacks prosciutto, mortadella and Genoa salami with provolone, olive oil and balsamic (Caputo's). Stuart Melling of Gastronomic SLC wrote in 2026: For me that's the highlight of the sandwiches, but everything here is great, from their zest muffuletta through their hearty meatballs
(Gastronomic SLC). Braxtyn Birrell of SLUG found it a little heavy on the Italian luncheon meat
in 2020 and preferred the Old School (SLUG).
Tony Caputo died in 2021, and his son Matt runs the market now with his wife, Yelena (SLUG). Vanessa Chang of culture, the cheese magazine, called the market Disneyland for grown-ups who love to nerd out at the sight of a cheese cave dedicated to babying whole wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and washed-rind beauties such as taleggio
(culture).
Order this / avoid
- Order: the muffuletta, whole. Lydia Martinez (Salt Lake Magazine, 2023) says the olive brine and oil soak into the bread and the sandwich gets better later in the day.3
- Order: the Old School, sausage, Genoa salami and capocollo with cacio de roma and a roasted red pepper spread. Braxtyn Birrell (SLUG, 2020):
The tangy pepper spread adds a hint of smokiness, pairs well with the oil-and-vinegar dressing, and cuts some of the overall richness of the stacked deli meat.
5 - Order: the Meatball, with a knife and fork. Braxtyn Birrell (SLUG, 2020):
It is unbelievably rich, flavorsome and messy as hell.

What locals & experts say
- Braxtyn Birrell, SLUG (2020), on the Old School:
This may be my favorite sandwich of all time.

Good to know
- How it works: order at the counter, shop the cases of cured meat, cheese and chocolate while you wait, and listen for your name (Time Out).
- Cheese: ask for a taste before you buy. Adri Pachelli, who runs the shop's classes, told City Cast Salt Lake in 2023:
Don't be afraid to ask for a sample before buying!
10 - Price: whole sandwiches $12.89 to $16.99 and halves $8.29 to $10.99 on the house menu, read in September 2026.
- When: open every day, with shorter hours on Sunday.
- Booking: none. It is a counter.
- Where: 314 West Broadway (300 South), downtown. Caputo's also runs a shop in Holladay, and classes run at both.
Verdict
should-visit — Go to this downtown counter for a muffuletta that holds its own against New Orleans: buy it whole and eat half now, half later. Expect to pay about $13 to $17 for a whole sandwich in 2026, and to wait at the counter with the cheese cases in reach.
