Chunga's
Chunga's serves its tacos al pastor on corn tortillas, with pork roasted in a marinade of guajillo chiles and achiote.
Why go
The kitchen cooks from central and southern Mexico, Mexico City above all (Eater). Come for the al pastor. Stuart Melling of Gastronomic SLC wrote in 2026: Regulars come back time and again, and often for one item in particular: al pastor
(Gastronomic SLC). Kolbie Peterson ate the al pastor at the Redwood Road branch for the Salt Lake Tribune in 2024: Chunga's serves their tacos al pastor sprinkled with chopped white onions, cilantro and (delightfully) bits of pineapple, which combined with the meat for a bite that was savory, smoky, sweet and tangy
(Salt Lake Tribune).
Jeff David of Utah Stories found the al pastor milder at the 900 West counter in 2018, with a subtle flavor with some mild background heat,
so order the spicy pork beside it. In his words: While Al pastor is a little bit of a wallflower at the party, spicy pork is definitely the looking-for- a-fight Bouncer
(Utah Stories).
The prices let you order both. Melling put a taco at $2.50 on his 2026 list: Tacos are available ala carte for just $2.50 and are worth every penny
(Gastronomic SLC).
Order this / avoid
- Order: the tacos al pastor, with the pineapple on top. Kolbie Peterson (Salt Lake Tribune, 2024) had them as a combo with rice and beans.1
- Order: the sope with spicy pork, a fried round of masa under refried black beans, crumbled Mexican cheese, lettuce and the meat. Jeff David (Utah Stories, 2018):
It's like your personal meat cake, and could be a meal in and of itself; it's heavy, rustic, and authentic.
