Canyon Market
Janet and Richard Tarlov have run Glen Park's independent grocery since 2006, baking the bread in the store, three minutes' walk from the BART portal.1
Why go
The Tarlovs put their intent on their own front page: We promote clean, wholesome, delicious food and the people who grow, harvest and prepare it,
and they buy from producers who add life to the soil, treat our waterways and oceans with care.
1 In practice that means a bakery and a coffee bar inside the shop and a catering department out the back.1 Jeff shopped it in 2017 and put it next to Bi-Rite: It has a great cheese selection as well as fresh-baked bread.

Order this / avoid
- Order: bread from the in-store bakery and something off the cheese counter. Both are Jeff's picks.2
- Avoid: expecting supermarket prices. This is an independent full-service grocer and it charges like one.1
What locals & experts say
- Jeff (first-hand), 30 May 2017, five stars:
Local neighborhood grocery store with a focus on local and organic producers. It has a similar feel as Bi-Rite market. It has a great cheese selection as well as fresh-baked bread.

Verdict
could-visit — Jeff gave it five stars and named the cheese and the bread, which is the whole reason to walk into a grocer you do not live near. The Tarlovs bake on site and have run it independently since 2006, so it is a real shop rather than a shelf of the same boxes. It is a neighborhood errand, not a trip, so it sits below should-visit unless you are already in Glen Park.
