La Espiga De Oro
La Espiga rolls a small burrito, and on 24th Street that is a decision. The tortilla goes on translucent and the chicharrón is the filling. It is a market and a panadería as well as a counter.
Why go
A smaller burrito is built more selectively, Cesar Hernandez writes, so you are unlikely to hit a bite that is mostly rice.1
Order this / avoid
- Order: the chicharrón burrito.
- Order: a lime with it. That is the only thing Hernandez adds.
- Avoid: coming for the forearm-sized version. This counter does not build them that way.
What locals & experts say
- Cesar Hernandez, San Francisco Chronicle, November 2025:
The squat size of Espiga's burritos, nowhere near the toddler size we've come to expect of the form, might be its secret weapon... Here, chicharron is not to be missed. It keeps its intoxicating crunch, and the scant accompanying ingredients like rice, beans and avocado work to highlight the fried pork.
1 - I have not found Eater SF or anybody else writing about this counter.
Good to know
- Where: 2916 24th Street, in the Mission.
- Getting in: counter service, no bookings, and a few tables.
- Timing: breakfast, lunch and dinner, daily.
Verdict
could-visit — Cards are fine at the counter, and it is cheap.
